About Physics with Artificial Intelligence, BSc (Hons) - at Keele University

Hear from our students and staff – who share their personal experiences of what it's like to study Physics and Astrophysics at Keele. Recorded in January 2024. Course overview Discover how physics and artificial intelligence are deeply interconnected on our Physics with Artificial Intelligence BSc. Just as physicists develop mathematical models to describe and predict natural phenomena, AI uses similar computational techniques to learn from and interpret vast datasets.

This symbiotic relationship means that advances in one field often directly inform and accelerate progress in the other. In your first two years of study, you will build a solid foundation in core physics concepts including gravitation, relativity and quantum physics, while strengthening your computational and problem-solving skills. This will enable you to tackle complex problems that require a deep understanding of physical principles and advanced data analysis techniques. Building on these skills, you will learn the latest methods and research directions in AI, including data science techniques, machine learning applications and computational intelligence.

You will then apply these skills and techniques to solve advanced physics problems. Designed to provide you with the specialist skills you will need as a professional, modern physicist, you will benefit from a suite of practical and professional development modules embedded throughout our curriculum. From scientific programming and writing to dedicated career-focused sessions, we will provide you with the knowledge, tools and connections to develop a strong foundation for your future career. From year two you can enhance your employability by choosing to spend time in industry with year-long or flexible placements or spend a year studying abroad.

Your learning will be supported by workshops, and small group activities, with frequent opportunities to apply key concepts in laboratory classes and other practical sessions. In your final year you will examine advanced level frontier topics including electromagnetism and machine learning applications, whilst having the opportunity to undertake an independent research project and choose from a variety of optional modules that align with your career goals. Your research project provides an excellent opportunity for you to pursue a self-directed, independent investigation of an experimental, computational or theoretical nature. With the guidance of a supervisor, you will plan, execute and report your results, including a presentation aimed at potential employers. *We have compared the positivity ratings of all participating UK institutions using the NSS 2025 sector data to determine Keele's position relative to other broad-based universities (i.e. excluding specialist institutions and further education colleges).

Physics ranked Top 10 in England (NSS 2025, broad-based universities)* Tackle physical problems and real-world challenges using machine learning and artificial intelligence Engage in hands-on learning through interactive workshops, collaborative group activities, and immersive laboratory experiences Gain the problem-solving, experimental, programming and teamworking skills that are highly valued by employers in a broad range of sectors Undertake a research project and professional development activities in preparation for academic research and industry roles For more details, please see the course page on the Keele website.
