We also offer an MSci (Hons) Computer Science with Games Technology course - a four-year integrated-Masters degree with entry at undergraduate level.


The BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Games Technology degree will give you advanced knowledge of game engine architectures, computer graphics and game design, including the specialist skills needed for building computer game software.

You will acquire leading-edge computer games programming expertise, becoming proficient in a broad range of programming languages and software design techniques. You will also develop commercially valuable skills in computing laboratories and work with research groups.


All of City's undergraduate Computing degrees are accredited by the Chartered Institute for IT (BCS), exempting graduates from their professional examinations and offering a pathway to Chartered status.

This course is also accredited by TIGA, a non-profit UK trade association representing the UK's games industry.

Requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements

  • 'A' Level: ABB (Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics preferred)
  • Tariff: 128 UCAS points
  • IB: 32 points, including all Higher Level subjects at grade 6.
  • BTEC: D*DD (IT/numerate subjects only).

In addition, the following is required:

  • GCSE: A minimum of grade 4 (C) in GCSE English, a minimum of grade 6 (B) in GCSE Mathematics.

Other suitable qualifications

  • Extended Project Qualification: We welcome applications that include the EPQ.  Where relevant, this may be included in our offer, resulting in an 'A' Level offer reduced by one grade.
  • Mixed qualifications: We do accept applications from students who are completing a combination of qualifications. For this course, this would be something like: D* in BTEC IT with a grade B in 'A' Level Computer Science and a grade B in another 'A' Level. We may also take 'AS' Level grades into consideration.
  • Access to Higher Education will be considered when combined with substantial work or other experience.
  • Other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.

English requirements

  • IELTS: 6.0 overall, to include 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in all other components.
  • PTE Academic: 58 overall with a minimum of 50 in each component.

Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

How to apply

Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.

You can apply to up to five universities and institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60.

Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.

UCAS has implemented an 'invisibility of choices' policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institute can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.

You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £23 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £12.

When to apply

Your application for entry in September 2018 should arrive at UCAS between September 2016 and 15th January 2018. Applications that arrive after 15th January 2018 will be considered only at City's discretion.

When your application is acknowledged by UCAS, you will be sent a personal identification number so that you can access your records via Track on the UCAS website.

Teaching and learning

As a student on City's Computer Science with Games Technology BSc (Hons) degree course, you will learn through a combination of lectures, seminars/tutorials, laboratory sessions and case studies. Taught modules are typically delivered through a 20-hour series of lectures and 10 hours of tutorials and laboratory sessions. Laboratory sessions aim to demonstrate the application of concepts and techniques through the use of state-of-the-art software development tools and environments.

In addition to contact hours, you are expected to undertake independent study amounting to around 120 hours per module, including coursework assignments.

Project and group work aim to develop creativity and problem solving and play a major part in the course. This activity is carried out under the supervision of academic staff, offered through a series of supervision sessions.

Learning is also supported by Moodle - City's online e-learning system.


Assessment is by examination and coursework although some components, such as the team project, are assessed by coursework alone.

Coursework takes many forms, including programming, essays, theoretical work and modelling.

Written examinations contain theoretical questions (including mathematical aspects), short essays on the applications of computational techniques, and writing and analysing small amounts of code.

Feedback will be provided in line with our Assessment and Feedback Policy. In particular, you will normally be provided with feedback within three weeks of the submission deadline or assessment date. For end-of-module examinations or an equivalent significant task (e.g. an end-of-module project), feedback will normally be provided within four weeks. The timescale for feedback on final-year projects may be longer.

The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose.

This BSc (Hons) degree consists of three stages, each corresponding to an academic year. Professional Pathway students undertake IT work experience while studying part-time for part two and part three over three years.

The first year is shared with other Computing-related courses at City, giving you a firm grounding in Computer Science and allowing you to transfer to other City Computer Science degrees at the end of part one (subject to approval).

Part one

A common first-year syllabus with other Computing courses at City offers flexibility, as you can make your final choice of degree at the end of part one (subject to approval).

You will take six compulsory core modules:

  • Computation and reasoning (15 credits)
  • Mathematics for computing (15 credits)
  • Software engineering (15 credits)
  • Systems architecture (15 credits)
  • Programming in Java (30 credits)
  • Business systems (30 credits).

Part two

In part two, you take a further six core modules (15 credits each) and undertake either a work-based project (for Professional Pathway students) or a team project (both worth 30 credits).

The core modules in part two are:

  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Programming in C++
  • Games technology
  • Networks and operating systems
  • Object-oriented analysis and design
  • Professional development in IT.

Professional Pathway students take the core modules over a period of two years.

Part three

In part three, you take one compulsory core module - Advanced games technology (15 credits) - and select a further four from a list of over 20 elective modules. In addition, you undertake an individual project (45 credits), researching and developing systems in an area of your own specialist interest.

Overall workload

Contact hours will take the form of taught modules delivered through a series of 20 lectures and 10 hours of tutorials/laboratory sessions. Each lecture and tutorial/laboratory session lasts 1 or 2 hours. The programme is delivered and assessed via a coordinated combination of: lectures (including programmed student activity); supervised tutorials; supervised laboratory work; independent coursework; group project work; and individual project work and dissertation.

*The tuition fee for UK and EU students is determined by the UK Government and was £9,250 for the first year of study at City in 2017/18. The tuition fee for students commencing their studies in 2018/19 has not yet been confirmed: we will update these pages as soon as we receive confirmation. Fees in each subsequent year of study may be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government's Office for Budget Responsibility. However, this is subject to confirmation. The index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. If fees do increase in each subsequent year of study, we will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study. Fees in each subsequent year of study will be subject to an annual increase limited by the All Items Retail Prices Index.

Coding Bootcamp

Your introduction to coding at City

City's first-year Computer Science students are introduced to coding during a two-week long coding marathon. The highlight is the presentation showcase, where students get to exhibit their achievements to academics and their fellow students. From complete amateurs to those with some experience, everyone is challenged to develop their own project by the end of the bootcamp.


The School has its own dedicated placements team that provides on-hand placement and internship support and guidance for students throughout their studies. You can undertake one of the following placement schemes:

  • One-year placement - these are taken after you have successfully completed your second or third year of studies; students work between nine and fifteen months on placement before returning to City to complete their final year;
  • Summer internships - these can be taken every summer on completion of the academic year.

Our dedicated team of placement specialists, the Professional Liaison Unit, has extensive experience in helping students to secure placement employment across a range of industries. The team also has longstanding relationships with an impressive and diverse range of companies spanning both large and small organisations including start-ups in Tech City.

Placements are highly encouraged at City; students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to; achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.
