About Sociology & Criminology at Bournemouth University

Are you compelled to dig deep into the behaviour and backgrounds of criminals? Are you eager to find out whether one type of person is more likely to commit crime than another? Or perhaps you want to discover whether certain factors can drive a person in a criminal direction? If you answered ‘yes!’, then this is the course for you!

Shining a spotlight on criminology from a sociological perspective, our degree will give you the sophisticated knowledge and analytical skillset needed for breaking into the public and social sectors, as well as the criminal justice system, or alternatively is a great starting block for further study.

Taught by academic experts and specialist guest speakers, you’ll get to grips with advanced theory, tackling curriculum hot topics such as social exclusion, trafficking, migration, terrorism, anthropology, globalisation, and many other eye-opening components.

Praised for its flexibility, the course allows you to complete either a 30-week placement in your third year, or a 20-day placement in your second or final year – crucial for enhancing your employability. Plus, in year four you’ll get the chance to develop your own piece of research based on a topic that interests you, or perhaps aligns itself with your future career or study plans, in the form of a final year dissertation.

Entry requirements

For September 2019 and September 2020 entry: 104 - 120 UCAS tariff points including a minimum of 2 A-levels or equivalent. BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM.

International entry requirements:

For September 2019 entry: If English is not your first language, you will need IELTS (Academic) 6.5 with minimum 5.5 in each component or equivalent. 

For September 2020 entry: If English is not your first language, you will need IELTS (Academic) 6.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in reading or writing and 5.5 in all other components or equivalent.
