About Marketing Communications at Bournemouth University

This course aims to give you a critical understanding of marketing communications, consumer behaviour, integrated campaign planning, research principles and practice, and digital communication. The course has been developed to produce visionary marketing communications professionals who are critical of existing practice and innovative and strategic in their own practice.

Employers are increasingly looking for broad knowledge with specific expertise in one aspect of the marketing mix which is why we give you the option to redefine your specialism in the second year, as you develop knowledge of the industry and gain confidence in your particular skills. You can either choose to remain on the broader-focused degree programme or to select a specialist field of marketing communications and graduate with a more specific degree title.

Not only will you graduate with a degree from Bournemouth University, but as part of your studies, you will also be given support to gain professional qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing as well as other professional bodies depending on the field you choose to specialise in:

  • Marketing Communications with Advertising - The Institute of Practitioners in Advertising
  • Marketing Communications with Public Relations - The Chartered Institute of Public Relations
  • Marketing Communications with Digital Media - The Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing

These industry recognised qualifications will enhance your employability for both placement and graduate roles.

Our compulsory placement year, unique amongst marketing communications courses in the UK, reflects our commitment to ensuring that students acquire the practical skills and relevant, real-world perspective seen as invaluable by employers. You'll gain the chance to make great career contacts and bolster your blossoming resume. In year four, you’ll use the insights you've developed to work on live briefs set by external organisations and complete a dissertation as an academic paper or consultancy-based project, as well as building your own curriculum as you select units to suit your interests and, ultimately, your career aspirations.

This course received an impressive 95% overall satisfaction rating from our final year students in the latest National Student Survey (NSS, 2018).
