This specially designed degree offers students the opportunity to study Game Design together with Media Studies. In common with all our Creative Studies and Media courses, this degree is structured around a balance between theory and practice.
For the Game Design element of the degree, practical work - with game engines or physical game materials - is integrated with opportunities to engage critically with theories of gaming culture, mechanics, narratives and aesthetics. Together these provide students with the insight needed to produce games that are both immersive and engaging. During the course, you will have the opportunity to create games in many formats, including: 2D platforms games, 3D games, board game and collectable card games. ‘Play’ will be used in teaching and development aspects of the course.
The BA in Media Studies with Game Design combines the study of these subjects and enables students to creatively engage with the media, while developing and deepening a critical knowledge and understanding of its forms, structure and content. You will engage with media topics and theory through a mix of critical analysis, empirical research, and practical engagement. Fields of study include: television and radio; film and video; digital media and computer games; professional writing; journalism; public relations; social media and media practice. Skills and techniques learnt during the study and production of audio-visual material lie at the core of many of the key areas in the creative industries. This course will equip students with a solid grounding in the technical and practical skills leading to professional careers in these fields.
