In Japan, bachelor’s degrees are offered at traditional universities (国立大学, 公立大学, 私立大学) and specialised higher education institutions, including those focused on technology and the arts. These programs award undergraduate degrees such as Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Arts (BA), and Bachelor of Engineering (BEng).
Japanese is the main teaching language, but the number of programs taught in English is increasing.
International students can apply directly to their chosen Japanese university. Required documents usually include academic transcripts, a motivation letter, and a resume or CV. These might need to be translated into Japanese or English, depending on the requirements of your university.
Proficiency in English or Japanese is required, with tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) being widely accepted. Academic requirements will vary, but might include specific GPA or entrance examination results, as well as relevant subject knowledge.
Tuition fees for undergraduate degrees in Japan vary, but international students can expect to pay between ¥500,000 and ¥1,200,000 annually (about $4,500 to $11,000 USD) at public universities. Fees at private universities may be higher. Like in many other countries, EU/EEA students often pay the same tuition fees as domestic students.
A range of scholarships and financial aid options are available to international students through universities, private organisations, and the Japanese government, helping with the financial aspect of studying abroad.
