In Austria, bachelor’s or undergraduate degrees are offered at public universities, universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), and a few private universities. These institutions provide a wide range of bachelor’s degrees, including Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Arts (BA).
German is the main teaching language at Austrian universities, but there is a growing selection of programs taught entirely in English, catering to international students.
International students usually apply directly to their chosen Austrian university. However, some institutions may require applications to be processed through a centralised system, particularly for courses taught in English. Essential documents for application generally include academic transcripts (which may need to be translated into German or English), a motivation letter, and a CV or resume.
Proof of proficiency in English or German is essential, with tests such as IELTS, TOEFL, or German language exams like TestDaF or DSH being widely accepted. The academic requirements vary by program and may need specific GPA scores, SAT scores, or knowledge in relevant subjects.
Tuition fees in Austria are relatively low compared to other European countries. International students from outside the EU/EEA are expected to pay just over €700 per semester at public universities. However, students from EU/EEA countries, and those with ‘equal status’ (such as permanent residents), often enjoy the same benefits as Austrian students, including either low fees or no tuition fees at all.
There are various scholarships and financial aid options available to international students through universities, private organisations, and the Austrian government. These financial supports aim to make studying in Austria more accessible to international students.
