About Masters of Education in Educational Leadership, MEd - at Yorkville University

The Master of Education in Educational Leadership is designed for professionals who want to become effective and innovative educational leaders. This two year program will build your leadership skills to grow your organization and advance your career. The Master of Education in Educational Leadership will prepare you with the critical thinking and leadership practice to confront emerging local and global trends in education.

The program is divided into two specializations: Educational Administration and Leadership in Learning. The Educational Administration stream is for administrators and educators in the K-12 system. The Leadership in Learning stream is for non-school-based educational leaders in public, private, and not-for-profit organizations. Whichever specialization you choose, the Master of Education in Educational Leadership will prepare you with the conceptual, practical, ethical, and social tools to anticipate and solve problems, manage conflict, engage stakeholders, and encourage growth.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The Master of Education in Educational Leadership is a two year, online program. Participants are first introduced to seven core, foundational courses. Participants then have the opportunity to focus their studies in either Educational Administration or Leadership in Learning.

The Educational Administration stream focuses on courses designed to address the challenges and opportunities of administering in the K-12 system. The Leadership in Learning stream focuses more broadly on leading education initiatives in public, private, or not‐for‐profit institutions. Each stream culminates in a capstone project in which participants choose either a Major Academic Report or an Action Research Project.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to a program in the Faculty of Education, all prospective students must provide the following:

  • Proof that they have earned a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university. Preference will be given to applicants with a degree in education or a field related to the planned area of study.
  • A grade point average (GPA) in their undergraduate study sufficiently strong to support the ability to participate in a rigorous, graduate level program of academic study; this is normally shown by an applicant's cumulative GPA (average on all undergraduate courses) or the GPA on the final 60 undergraduate credits taken. Generally, graduate programs require an undergraduate cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 or 4.3 scale. Applicants may be admitted with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.99 if there is clear evidence in their application leading the admissions committee to believe that the applicant is prepared for graduate study. Students admitted with GPA below 3.0 will be subject to conditions established by the admissions committee and will not be allowed to continue in the program if such conditions are not met. Applicants whose cumulative GPA in their undergraduate study is below 2.5 on a 4 or 4.3 scale are not considered for conditional admission under this general policy and will not be admitted.
  • Although standardized test results, such as the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test, are not required as a precondition for admission to the program, applicants are encouraged to submit these scores if they believe such test results would strengthen their application for admission.
  • Evidence they have successfully completed two or more years of employment in education or an education-related field. In some cases, this employment requirement may be replaced by involvement and participation in volunteer, community-based activities.
  • Applicants seeking admission to the Educational Administration stream of the M.Ed. (Educational Leadership) are expected to have gained their education-related experience in the K-12 school system.
  • Two letters of reference from professional or academic sources, preferably from persons able to comment meaningfully on the motivation and ability of the applicant to undertake graduate study and/or on their work experience in an education-related field.
  • A resume or CV.
  • A 700 to 1000-word letter of describing future career goals, motivation for applying to this program, and work experience relevant to the field of adult education studies. In this letter, applicants should comment on how their combination of life experience, work experience and/or educational background makes them a suitable candidate for the program.
  • An application fee of $75 (CAD) and all relevant documents listed above must be submitted before the Admissions Committee reviews an application. Once the Committee has reviewed submitted documents, both successful and unsuccessful applicants are notified in writing.
  • The admission process is selective. Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission to the M.Ed. program; the Faculty of Education reserves the right to determine suitable candidates for admission.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have obtained a bachelor's or first professional degree in a language of instruction other than English are required to submit confirmation of an official test of ability to work and study in English. Acceptable tests include:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 580 (written version) or 92 (internet based version);
  • Test of Written English (TWE) with a minimum score of 5.0;
  • International English-Language Test System (IELTS) with a minimum overall band width of 7.0 or higher;
  • Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees (CanTest) with a minimum overall bandwidth of 4.5;
  • Or a score equivalent to these scores on another test of English language proficiency recognized by and acceptable to the University.

The university reserves the right to refuse admission to any student whose proficiency in English is questionable and to ask any student whose written work is below acceptable standards to withdraw from the program.
