About Theatre Production (Design and Management), BA (Hons) - at University of West London

Course summary

Overview
This course covers a wide range of theatre-related skills, including stage management, stage technology (lighting and sound) and design. It will be taught as a two-year intensive BA course.

Why choose this course?
Intensive study
By studying intensively over two years, students will:
  • qualify and enter the profession a year earlier
  • save a considerable amount of money.
All aspects of a three-year Theatre Production course will still be covered, with the same amount of time devoted to each.
Partnership with Europe's largest community theatre
This course is embedded in a working theatre - not just a student theatre, but Europe's largest community theatre. We operate in close partnership with The Questors Theatre in Ealing; five minutes from the University's main site.
The course combines theory and practical experience, which involves working in various capacities on shows at both The Questors, and in the London College of Music - one of the major faculties at the University.
Facilities
The Questors is a long-established, fully-equipped working theatre, with:
  • two performance spaces: the Dame Judi Dench Theatre and the Studio Theatre
  • a large set-building workshop
  • a paintshop
  • an extensive costume wardrobe
  • a sound-editing suite and many other facilities.
The University itself has two large performance spaces, as well as other less formal spaces where performance is encouraged, and a modern suite of rehearsal and production rooms.
Taught by industry professionals
The course is taught by industry professionals from the London College of Music. The College started life over a century ago as a music conservatoire. It retains this identity, but over recent years has developed many courses in modern performance-related technologies, including this one.
Both London College of Music and The Questors Theatre enjoy a high reputation in the industry, which is enhanced by the highly-motivated and thoroughly-trained graduates from this course.

Career and study progression
Graduates from this course will have a wide range of career opportunities in the performing arts world open to them. This includes not only opportunities in buildings-based or touring theatre, but also careers in the film and TV branches of the industry.
On successful completion of the course, you will have the choice of going on to MA courses in advanced specialisms. Relevant courses at the University include:
  • MA Events Management
  • MA Design.

    Entry requirements

    Entry requirements

    You will need:

    • 120-128 UCAS tariff points normally in a minimum of two subject areas
    • GCSE English and Maths or Level 2 equivalent.

We welcome applicants with qualifications in BTEC and/or A level in relevant courses, those from IB courses, or those with a Progression or Advanced Diploma in Creative Media.

We are very happy to consider applicants with formal qualifications in a range of areas. You must be able to demonstrate a genuine interest in, and some relevant experience of, one of the following:

    - lighting
    - sound
    - stage management
    - construction
    - props-making/design
    - set design
    - costume design
    - wardrobe.

We will also consider your application if you have no formal qualifications, but have significant experience, expertise or skills in a related field. You must also show equivalent competencies in English and Maths.

As this is an accelerated, two-year BA course, it is unlikely that we will consider direct entry to the second year. However, for September 2017, while the existing three-year course is still running, we will consider direct entry, through the University's Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) processes. For example, you may already have extensive experience in theatre and want to study for a recognised qualification. Typical roles which may be appropriate are house manager, related front of house operations, or significant experience of work in a production team in any of the areas listed above.

International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 6.0 or above and a minimum of 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening).

In some countries where teaching is in English, we may accept local qualifications. Please visit http://www.uwl.ac.uk/international/your-country to check for local equivalencies.

We offer pre-sessional English language courses if you do not meet these requirements. Find out more about our English Language courses
