Course Overview
The Physical Education degree has a fundamental focus on learning and teaching issues with many of the modules having 'hands on' teaching experiences with children. Issues of inclusion, entitlement and differentiation are embedded in many of the modules, and several assessments require students to plan and evaluate their own and other's teaching
The current health and outdoor adventure activities focus of physical education is strongly represented in the overall content of the degree. This degree is the only one of its kind within the region and is distinctive from sport science or sports studies degrees through a main focus on presenting students with inclusive learning and teaching strategies in order to be able to provide positive experiences for young people in physical education.

Key Features
BA Physical Education is a unique degree programme within the region which has teaching (primary or secondary) as a main focus.
There is an acknowledged scarcity of primary school teachers with a specialism and confidence in delivering quality physical education.
It is equally recognised that Sports Science or Sports Studies degrees are not an appropriate preparation for physical education teaching with students having limited or no experience of working with children.
This degree has practical teaching in a physical education context with children at its core. All practical areas of the experience within the National Curriculum for Physical Education are included within the degree.
Modules
Professional Accreditations
Students have the opportunity of undertaking a range of National Governing Body coaching awards, and other training opportunities, to support their career aspiration throughout the degree.
International
Second year students have the opportunity of study abroad at California State University, Fullerton, USA or Greensboro University, North Carolina, USA. USA students from these Universities also study

Assessment
In line with the philosophy underpinning the degree, there is a strong emphasis on learning and teaching methods in the assessment of modules. While good quality of personal performance is encouraged, it is not a focus of assessment in the practical based modules. Rather, issues of inclusion, entitlement and differentiation are embedded in many of the assessments, and students are required to plan and evaluate their own and other students' teaching.
Students learn how to present a balanced evidenced argument through their formal written work, as well as via individual and group presentations. Within the final year students will design and conduct their own research project or critical portfolio in a specialist area of their choice. Specific types of assessments include; essays, laboratory reports, presentations (group and individual), practical tasks, examinations (seen and unseen papers).
Career Opportunities
Students graduating from the degree are likely to progress on to a PGCE primary or secondary Physical Education course or the in-house MA Physical Education programme. Other popular career routes include Physical Education and School Sport (PESS) or Dragon Sport officers, Sports Development, Youth Work, other higher degrees, and the uniformed services.
