About International Hotel Management, BA - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

The programme comprises two years of full time study. Each year is divided into three four-month blocks, two of which are spent studying at Swansea Business Campus with the remaining block spent on placement in the Marriott Hotel.

Students will therefore spend a total of eight months (two four-month blocks) within the Marriott Hotel, working in a range of departmental areas. Placement during the first year of the degree will have a more operational emphasis; the second year will combine operational duties at a more advanced level together with involvement in hotel administration and management. Students will develop enhanced guest service skills and a critical understanding of the operational requirements associated with different departments in the hotel.

For the remaining sixteen months (four four-month blocks), students will pursue academic study at Swansea Business Campus. The modules studied will develop a critical understanding of essential management theory and practice, provide a global context within which hotel organisations operate, and engage students with principles of sustainable business practice. This will provide a theoretical foundation of subject knowledge that can then be applied within a practical context during the placements at the Marriott Hotel.

Key Features

The BA (Hons) International Hotel Management course is unique in terms of its provision of work-based vocational training in the Marriott Hotel alongside academic study at UWTSD. Furthermore, as this programme is delivered over two years rather than the conventional three, it represents excellent value for money.

There is an increased demand for graduates with practical experience, greater work-based competency, and effective management skills. This collaborative programme is designed to produce graduates who not only have a firm understanding of the academic theory underpinning the industry, but have been given the opportunity to apply this theory to their practice during placements at the Marriott Hotel.

The Marriott Hotel group is widely recognised as one of the leading hotel brands in the world. The Swansea Marriott is a four star hotel situated in the Maritime Quarter of the city, and trades strongly throughout the year. It is popular with both business clients and leisure tourists, and hosts visiting Premier League football teams (to play Swansea City FC) and many international sports teams, reflecting the high profile of the establishment. The Marriott Hotel group places a premium on high quality training and staff welfare, and provides an excellent learning environment for our students. Departmental structures within the hotel enable students to gain experience in a range of different areas, including food and beverage operations, hotel administration, and guest service operations. High achieving students will be well placed for selection onto the prestigious Marriott 'Voyager? Graduate Management Training programme.

While International Hotel Management is a new course, the School of Tourism and Hospitality in the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has over 25 years of experience in delivering programmes related to leisure, events, tourism and hospitality. The network of industry connections that have been developed over this time period ensures that the content of our programmes meets industry needs, and produces skilled graduates who are highly employable.

The friendly approach of the University and teaching teams allows early diagnosis of learning needs and support for skill enhancement. There is a learning support team who run regular workshops and tutorials in basic and advanced skill development. The friendly nature of the small programme team and close working relationships between tutors and students and students and their fellow students allows a positive, active learning environment.

The travel and tourism industry is of considerable importance to both the UK and global economies. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, in 2012 the industry grew faster than manufacturing, retail, financial services and communications, and supports 1 in 11 of all jobs worldwide. The significance and growth of this industry is expected to continue into the future. The BA (Hons) International Hotel Management programme at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David would be highly suitable for anyone wishing to pursue a career in the hotel and hospitality sector.

Career Opportunities

The BA (Hons) International Hotel Management programme is designed to produce graduates with both a strong academic understanding of the industry and the practical skills required by the sector. Feedback from employers suggests that many undergraduate hospitality programmes produce graduates with good theoretical knowledge, but who lack practical experience. The vocational emphasis of this programme puts our graduates in a particularly strong position when applying for jobs or graduate management training schemes in hotel organisations.

The Marriott Hotel has a global reputation for excellence, and extensive placement experience with this hotel group will help our graduates to stand out in the job market. High achieving students will be well placed to be selected onto the prestigious Marriott 'Voyager? Graduate Management Training programme subject to a successful interview.

Many graduates from hospitality-related programmes at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David have gone on to secure a range of management and operational positions in the hospitality sector, both locally and internationally. Examples include Belinda Oster, Executive Assistant at Hotel Jerome in Colorado; Damian Jenkins, Food and Beverage Director at the Ritz Carlton; and Mark Gallagher, General Manager at Morgan's Hotel in Swansea.
