Course Overview
The programme can offer a range of modules which cover broad sweeps of time (Ancient times, Medieval Europe, 1066-1452: Modern China, 1650-2000) allowing students to consider how societies alter and change, the long-term impact of war, economic upheaval and political radicalism, and the rise and fall of great powers. In addition the programme offers modules based upon depth, drilling down into events and moments of seminal change
Students can study a wide range of modules covering all aspects of the past from fascinating historical figures like Alexander the Great, Thomas Becket or Napoleon, to basic aspects of everyday life, such as myths, politics, warfare (both on land and at sea) and the economic and trading network. Many modules explore broader questions, for example, in the ancient period, about how Rome grew into an empire, or how Sparta became the legend that it is today, to more specialized ones focusing on the Great War, Genocide in the 20th century, the Wars of the Roses and Terrorism.
Whatever module or areas you choose to specialize in you will gain an in-depth knowledge of those areas of history of particular interest to you. In addition you may select an options modules in ancient Chinese History, or Classical Archaeology or Theology, or in Anthropology. The culmination of the degree is the dissertation, where you are free to pursue a topic of your choice in line with the research interests of your tutor.
Key Features
A Joint Honours programme in History and Ancient History offers students the opportunity to study aspects and issues from the past over a timeline far in excess of what the History programme alone could provide.
Students are able to draw comparisons and explore differences over a large stretch of time and between what seem on the surface to be fundamentally different societies and cultures.
There are opportunities for work in archives and the college museum. Students are able to work with many rare manuscripts and special collections of documents and resources.
Both programmes share a great deal in terms of academic concerns, and enhance within students very much the same sort of cognitive and intellectual skills and competencies (in terms of programme outcomes).
Moreover there is an established track record of close cooperation between the School of Classics and the School of Archaeology, History and Anthropology in others fields, notably Ancient and Medieval Studies and Ancient History and Archaeology.
