Are you an emerging opera singer looking to fine tune your performance skills before taking to the international stage?

The only one of its kind in New Zealand, this course is timed to equip you for Aria competitions, auditions internationally, masters or young artists' programmes and performance in general.

National and international tutors will work weekly with you on language, diction, acting stage craft and recitative - essential elements needed to become a successful opera singer.

Led by Dame Malvina Major and directed by Glenese Blake, this course is offered under the Conservatorium of Music within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

For admission and requirements, visit the Postgraduate Certificate page.

Classes will be taught by national and international visiting musicians including Sharolyn Kimmorley, Isabel Cunningham, Jennifer Martin-Smith, Stuart Maunder, Simon O'Neill, Helen Medlyn, and Michael Blake.  You will also be coached by repetiteur pianist David Kelly, language by Italian flautist Luca Manghi and movement and acting by the Music programme's Head of Voice Stephanie Acraman.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with other likeminded singers who are of a similar age, and who are exploring their voices in the world of opera. The high calibre of tutors we have been exposed to each week has surpassed any expectation I had when first enrolling in the course.” - Helene Holman (Opera Studies Student)

Dame Malvina Major - Senior Fellow in Music
Dame Malvina's international opera career has included 28 major operatic roles, extensive oratorio and concert repertoire and discography of commercial recordings.

Glenese Blake - Senior Lecturer in Voice
Winner of a number of prestigious awards, Glenese has had a successful singing career in England. As a Voice Fellow she teaches alongside Dame Malvina.
