About Electronic and Communications Engineering, BEng (Hons) - at University of Nottingham

For students who are particularly interested in communications, this degree covers communication devices, electronics, protocols and systems. Project work is directed towards specialism in these areas. The School is strong in the field of optical and microwave communications, and many opportunities for industrial project collaboration exist.

Year one
You will gain an understanding of the principles and practices on which electronic and communications engineering is founded, achieved through the study of analogue and digital electronics, the application of electrical energy and practical work including programming and projects. Your appreciation of the aspects of science and mathematics, which underpin the subject, will also be enhanced.

Year two
You will continue to develop your understanding of electronic and communications engineering. This will prepare you to study, in the final years of your course, emerging and advanced technologies usually taught by internationally recognised researchers. Group projects, presentations and seminars enable you to gain the skills and understanding essential for the workplace.

Years three and four
In the final years, you will be able to choose from a range of specialist topics. You will also undertake an individual research project, which forms a major component of your final year. During the third year of the MEng, you will participate in a group project, which examines the socio-economic and technical aspects of a major industrial endeavour.

By the end of the course
You will have a thorough understanding of electronic and communications engineering and will have learnt about emerging and advanced technologies. Through a major final-year project, you will refine your engineering and organisational skills in preparation for graduate placement. MEng graduates will have further enhanced their knowledge of the chosen specialist technologies.
