About School of Computer Science research areas at University of Nottingham

The School of Computer Science was established 30 years ago and is firmly established as a leading centre for Computer Science research. Our world-leading research tackles difficult real-world problems that often have high impact on industry, commerce and the public. It involves a shared ethos of "computing in the world" in which fundamental advances in Computer Science are connected to knowledge and methods from other disciplines to enable deep collaborations with research users in diverse sectors.

The School of Computer Science offers high quality supervision from world leading researchers for both PhD and MPhil research degrees. A PhD from Nottingham is a qualification that is well regarded by employers and will provide opportunities for you to work in both research and development.

In addition to the formal entry requirements, we are looking to recruit highly motivated individuals to join us to work towards a doctorate.

Regular representation in international conferences and journals, by both academics and researchers, indicates the high standards we achieve in this area. The school was ranked in the top 10 per cent of UK institutions in the 2008 independent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), with 80 per cent of it rated as world class/internationally leading.

Our research introduction shows how the school‘s research structure centres around well-funded leading research groups, laboratories and centres. Academic staff and researchers loosely fit into this model. The school’s People listing gives further details of our academic staff research interest
