About History research areas, PhD - at University of Nottingham

We are confident that you will find the School of History a stimulating place in which to conduct your research. The School has a thriving research community which includes both staff and research students, and will offer you many opportunities to develop your skills and widen your intellectual horizons. There are possibilities to participate in multi-disciplinary research and contribute to research seminars. The University has excellent academic facilities through its Graduate School, libraries and information technology and postgraduates also benefit from good quality accommodation, social, cultural and sports facilities that are avaiable in the University and the City.

The School has successfully supervised PhD students in Medieval History, East Midlands History, Women's History, British Labour and Business History, Modern German History, the History of British Foreign and Colonial Policy and East Asian History. Following the appointment of new staff, the School can offer additional supervision in the fields of Russian History and Environmental History.

Postgraduate students will receive instruction from their supervisor regarding both archival research and the writing of their thesis. In addition they will have access to the Hallward Library, which contains a wide range of primary and secondary material relating to the particular specialisms listed above. The library also houses nationally important collections of papers relating to political and church history. In cooperation with the Graduate School, the School of History offers advice and training relevant to the future careers of research students, such as the process of publication and the writing of effective CVs.
