About Comparative Literature, PhD - at University of Nottingham

Do you want to follow your research interests into a deeper understanding of how countries, cultures and nations interact? Do you believe deeper examination of contrasting ideologies can help shape modern day societies?

Having completed a masters degree and agreed your research topic with a supervisor, you will continue to explore themes relating to comparative literature and comparative cultural studies, from the Middle Ages to the present.

We have particular strengths in the cultural contexts of:

  • French and Francophone
  • Hispanic and Lusophone
  • Slavonic
  • German
  • Chinese studies

We also welcome projects involving film, TV and media studies.

Attending research seminars and special lectures will be an important part of your doctoral journey. You will also have the opportunity to deliver papers of your own. The culmination of your work will be a thesis that makes a significant contribution to research in comparative literature.

The University of Nottingham is one of eight universities making up the AHRC-funded Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C). The partnership provides funding and training to support the professional and personal development of the next generation of arts and humanities doctoral researchers.
