About Marine Planning and Management, MSc - at University of Liverpool

This new multidisciplinary programme is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to take up the exciting job opportunities arising from recent changes to the planning system for UK marine areas.

The need to improve our management of the seas and oceans is increasingly being recognised. We need to repair the damage that has been done to the marine environment and make it possible to draw on the sea’s rich natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Marine spatial planning is now developing as a key component of marine management. It is being taken up by coastal nations around the world, including Australia, China, the United States of America and several European nations, such as Germany, Portugal, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It aims to deliver a more organised sharing of sea space between demands as diverse as nature conservation, tourism, ports and shipping, renewable energy, fishing, aquaculture and mineral extraction. Some nations, including the UK, are now introducing statutory provisions for planning their coastal and marine waters and are setting up bodies and procedures for carrying out marine planning.

So there is a growing demand for professionals who understand marine science and management on the one hand, and spatial planning, as has long been practiced on land, on the other. This postgraduate programme of study bridges the gap between these two disciplines, and equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to embark on a career within marine management, with a particular focus on the newly emerging practice of marine spatial planning.

This course leads to the award of a Master of Science degree. It is a full-time, one-year course, though it is also possible to study part-time over two years, combining studies with other responsibilities.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement for all our postgraduate programmes is a good first degree (2:1) or above, in a related area from an approved university or equivalent. Applications from those with non traditional qualifications and relevant work experience are also welcomed and will be considered on their individual merits. Where English is not an applicant’s first language, an English qualification is also required, as shown below. International qualifications Applications from international students are welcome. International qualifications will be evaluated in line with the National Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) guidelines. English language qualifications All applicants must have reached a minimum required standard of English language, and are required to provide evidence of this. Qualifications accepted by the University include GCSE English; GCE O level English; AS Level English; A Level English Language; IELTS; TOEFL; Cambridge Proficiency etc. Please see www.liv.ac.uk/international/countries/index for a full list. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 0.5 (eg you need to improve from 6.0 to 6.5) you should attend the six week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a grade of 1.0 (eg you need to improve from 5.5 to 6.5) you should attend the ten week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 1.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.0) you should attend the 19 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 (eg you need to improve from 4.5 to 6.5) you should attend the 29 week course. If you need to increase your IELTS score by a band of 2.0 or 2.5 (eg you need to improve from 4.0 to 6.0 or 4.0 to 6.5) you should attend the 40 week course. If you require additional English language training during your study, the University is able to provide tuition and arrange IELTS tests through its English Language Centre, details of which are available at www.liverpool.ac.uk/english-language-centre. IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 5.5 in each component) TOEFL iBT 88 or above with minimum scores in components as follows: Listening and Writing 21, Reading – 22, Speaking 23.
