About Cross-Border Studies, MA - at University of Klagenfurt

Boundless possibilities await those who look beyond borders. We live in a globalised world where life is at its most exciting wherever cultures meet.

Pursue the Master's degree programme in Cross-Border Studies in Klagenfurt, in the cultural melting pot of the Alps-Adriatic region. Make the most of the limitless possibilities of the customisable curriculum and transform yourself into an internationally skilled and transculturally experienced border-crosser.

Cross-Border Studies is a degree programme in the field of linguistics and cultural studies. The programme focuses on an East or Southeast European language of your choice. You also learn or deepen your knowledge of a second language; here you can choose from German, English or Italian. Hence, the programme offers you a transcultural exploration of Slavic languages, literatures and cultures (Bosnian, Croatian, Montenegrin, Serbian, Russian, Slovenian) and of their interaction with the Romance and/or German-speaking and/or Anglophone world.

In addition to the linguistic and cultural studies core of the degree programme, you have the opportunity to focus intensively on a variety of individual specialisations. For example, you can focus on areas such as culture, business or media and thus deepen your knowledge in the disciplines relevant to you. These diverse specialisations allow you to gain expertise according to your personal strengths and interests. In this way, you will be ideally prepared to set new impulses as a cross-border game changer in multinational companies, in international management or in the dynamic world of media!

The degree programme in Cross-Border Studies is interdisciplinary, with strong practical relevance and opens up new perspectives on culture and society. Cross-Border Studies instils networked thinking and the ability to reflect and deals with the social prerequisites and dimensions of language and culture. Consequently, the programme helps you to understand the distinctive features of various cultural spheres and to acquire expert knowledge in your chosen field of specialisation. This means that later on, you will be able to skilfully apply your know-how in international companies, NGOs or cross-border institutions across a wide range of areas. The interdisciplinary nature of Cross-Border Studies provides the perfect preparation for a globalised world facing increasingly complex challenges.

A wide range of specialisation options means that you can tailor your studies to your particular interests and strengths. The Guided Electives comprise Applied Cultural Science, Business Administration and Entrepreneurship, Digitalisation, Diversity Education and Peace Studies, Women's and Gender Studies, Geography, History, Media and Communication Studies, Sustainable Development.

Leave the beaten track and discover your individual path to a career on both sides of the border with the Master's degree programme in Cross-Border Studies.
