About Biography and Creative Non-Fiction (Part time), MA - at University of East Anglia (UEA)

Study

This MA programme is for those who want to develop their own writing and reading skills in exciting genres as diverse as nature-writing, the personal essay, food journalism, art criticism and memoirs, while studying at a world-renowned institute for creative writing. An anthology of students' writing is published each year and distributed to a key list of editors, agents and critics.

Structure

Students take three compulsory modules, plus an additional fourth module chosen from the wide range available within the School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing. Each module is assessed by an essay, in addition to the final dissertation, submitted in September. Seminars are timetabled to be convenient to those who wish to pursue this degree but must travel from London.

Teaching

All teaching staff are acclaimed writers, creating great opportunities for networking and feeling part of a thriving literary community. Teaching is conducted by seminar, where set texts are discussed papers presented and student writing workshops undertaken. Leading biographers are invited to address students on aspects of their writing and seminars are supplemented by one-to-one tutorials with the module leader.

Employability

Students can go on to publish with a major house, or work with smaller, more specialist publishers. Some graduates undertake their PhD and pursue a full-length writing project, or return their original discipline (teaching, journalism, law). Students also have the opportunity to meet some of the UK's leading agents and publishers who make regular visits to talk to students on this degree path.

Entry requirements

Open to applicants with a good Honours degree - UK BA (Hons) 2:1 or equivalent - in any subject. Special entry requirements include the submission of a sample of your biographical writing or creative non-fiction accompanying the application. Please visit UEA's website for complete details.
