This four-week program offers students and young professionals the opportunity to have a cultural experience in Colombia, one of Latin America's most diverse countries, while taking subjects on Latin American issues. For January 2017, the Program will focus on: Sustainable Development in Latin America.
- La Sabana's Latin American Studies Program is aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students from varying disciplines. The Program appeals to students studying business, economics, international relations, politics, international studies, or cultural studies.
- Upon demand. students will take at least one course per academic stream.
- Students will be required to complete a final assessment for each of the individual courses undertaken. Assessments may vary depending on the course and may include research papers, oral presentations, class participation, etc. Transcripts will be issued.
- Language of instruction: English, minimun level required for students: B1/B2.

Sustainable Development in Latin America
Sustainable Development is a Holistic concept, one that is more commonly known as: "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," according to the Brundtland Commission. This new mindset has to be introduced from an early stage in young people's professional years. In order to raise awareness among the emerging generations, new light has to be shed upon SD as a transversal axis in the students' curricula. Therefore, people will more likely integrate sustainable measures in their daily lives, both personally and professionally. Design and Sustainability both combined are in major need, due to today's trending unsustainable life styles.
- General objective: to get familiar with the different applications and aspects of SD, as a holistic concept; also to learn about product & service development techniques, which will become key tools to elevate ideas from a conceptual level to a tangible one. The aim of this subject is to deliver up to date, local and broader in context content about social, economic and environmental aspects in Latinamerica, which makes it pertinent for any student no matter their academic background.
- Specific objectives: to emphasize in the investigative, exploratory and creative processes, prior to design of products, processes or services; to develop projects that are based on real problems within society and its many sectors, enabling an interdisciplinary environment and cooperation among students; to deliver a class that balances theory and hands on experiences.
- Methodology: In order to be coherent with the nature of the class, several alternative learning methodologies will be applied, such as: field work, tailored lectures, at least one guest speaker, workshops, literature & video seminars and in depth projects of design; presentations and cross critics will also take place. Each class is designed to create a different experience.
The learning outcomes will be reached through a programme divided into modules. In order to obtain a pass in this course the following requirements must be fulfilled:
1. Active participation at lectures and other scheduled activities (at least 80% presence)
2. Active participation in seminars
3. Submission of course assignment in the form of a report and posters

- Students will complete 36 hours of academic content in English over the four-week program at La Sabana University, as well as 60 hours of Spanish language.
- Students should receive academic credit towards their home institution degree, on approval from their home institution.
- Students will acquire a cultural understanding of Colombia and Latin America, as well as meeting other students from La Sabana's partner institutions from around the world.
- Students will complete courses not available directly at their home institution.
