About Psychotherapeutic Counselling, PG Dip - at University of Staffordshire

  • Offers a unique opportunity to gain experience and develop your professional knowledge and skills in Counselling under the guidance of highly qualified and committed staff.
  • Taught by highly experienced practitioners with diverse interests.
  • Uses an Integrative model, which allows us to study both unity between different theories, also looking at complexity and difference.

Psychotherapeutic Counselling courses at Staffordshire University offer two routes to a professional qualification in counselling. For those studying at postgraduate level (L7), the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma Psychotherapeutic Counselling and for those studying at undergraduate level (L6), the Professional Diploma Psychotherapeutic Counselling.

The postgraduate and undergraduate levels are taught together but assessed differently to reflect the appropriate level that students have enrolled on. Transfer from Professional Diploma to MSc/Postgraduate Diploma is possible if consistently high marks are achieved in Year 1.

Both the MSc/Postgraduate Diploma and the Professional Diploma are British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy accredited and meet the standards of the BACP for counsellor training and education. The courses reflect the four elements of training: Theory, Counselling Skills, Professional Issues and Personal Development as outlined by the Association. The course contact hours may be counted towards meeting part of criterion 4 of the BACP Counsellor/Psychotherapist Accreditation scheme. The provision of these four elements builds on the student's ability to function as an effective, ethically aware counsellor in a structured and coherent way.

The Postgraduate Diploma takes account of the move towards the more integrative approaches to counselling, which better meet the needs of counselling clients in a multicultural and diverse society. Five different counselling approaches are taught: Person Centred, Cognitive Behavioural, Psychodynamic, Attachment and Systemic. Students are encouraged to reflect on their own integrative approach as this develops over the course.
