About Modern And Contemporary Writing, MA - at University of Staffordshire

The opportunity to combine creative and critical approaches.

A strong focus on European, American and World literature from the late 19th to the 21st century.

The programme is delivered by distance learning and fits flexibly around other commitments.

Opportunities for mid-career personal development are strong

The MA Modern and Contemporary Writing will introduce you to the key writers, texts, compositional methods, literary movements, and critical perspectives of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The modules are arranged around key thematic and narrative concerns, paradigmatic shifts in writing, and emergent theoretical and critical perspectives. Uniquely, the assignments allow you to explore critical or creative approaches to the literatures of the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As a result, this MA helps you to develop as a critic, as a creative writer, or both. All students take the dissertation or creative project module at the end of their studies. If you take the creative project, you will be supported by the Writers' Workshop module to prepare you for the task ahead and to give you the opportunity to produce a very substantial piece of creative work. English dissertation students can use the Contemporary Approaches to Literature module to identify and explore the critical or theoretical perspectives they wish to employ in their research project.

By studying, writing about and employing the compositional strategies of some of the greatest works of recent literature, you will develop a wide-ranging and critically nuanced understanding of the development of literary styles and movements over the last 150 years or so, and be able to trace the development of literature up to the most contemporary practitioners.

The course is part-time, with all students completing it over 2 or 3 years. You will take 3 modules exploring key aspects of the literature of the period: Stream of Consciousness explores a key narrative development of the period, Literature and the Contemporary World explores issues of gender, postcolonial identities and ecology in recent literature, and Creativity and Crisis in American literature considers 3 distinct moments of American social and aesthetic crisis which gave rise to great bursts of creativity. You can then choose to take Contemporary Approaches to Literature which introduces you to the major critical approaches to the literature of the period and will help you to locate your own interests in a critical and creative context or the Writers' Workshop module which will help you to begin writing your major creative project.
