About Sociology, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course looks at how people in modern societies create and make sense of their social worlds and how, in turn, they are shaped by them. Sociologists explore people's actions and beliefs and how society and culture influence them. They also look at how people interact with each other and the impact they have on the society around them. You examine sociological approaches and research methods and how they apply to studying modern society. Also, you develop your analytical and research skills for understanding the structure of society and social change. The first year gives you the knowledge and skills that support a degree in sociology. In year two, you develop these further, building a firm basis for year three, when you can specialise. Topic areas include * culture, media and consumption * crime * social inequality (social class, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality) * sociology of the body, health, healthcare and illness experience * social change and the emerging global society * childhood, the family and old age * the labour market, employment patterns and equal opportunities This degree is part of the applied social science programme. The courses in this programme share many modules during year one, so you may be able to change course at the end of the first year.
