This course focuses on mathematics and its use in solving problems that arise in:
- physical contexts
Highly numerate graduates who can solve problems are much in demand by employers. In the first year, you develop a wide range of IT and practical skills such as communication, teamworking and problem solving, which you use throughout the course and afterwards.
The course follows three related themes in mathematics:
- mathematical and numerical approaches to modelling and problem solving
- analytical theme exploring topics in greater depth - an essential basis for mathematical ideas
- statistical and stochastic methods
You choose an optional module in each year relating to mathematics, or options including programming, astronomy or a foreign language. We encourage you to take a paid work placement in year three. Typical salaries range from £12,000 to £22,000. This allows you to apply your studies in the work environment and improve your career opportunities. It sometimes leads to the offer of a permanent job.
We use powerful modern technologies and constantly review course content to keep abreast of technological developments. Our mathematics provision was rated as excellent (23 out of 24) in its subject review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).The full report is available on the QAA website at http://www.qaa.ac.uk
