About Computer-aided Design Technology, BSc (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

We designed this course in consultation with companies such as PTC and Rolls-Royce, and organisations such as Sector Skills Council for Science Engineering and Manufacturing Technology. This ensures that it meets the needs of industry. You study computer-aided design and manufacture (CAD/CAM) in a university with a reputation for developing practical and innovative engineers. Almost all engineering product design involves using CAD tools. Innovative CAD is critical to the commercial success of national economies and individual companies. Demand for engineers and designers with computer-based technical skills is increasing every year. They play a central role in shaping products, processes and services in the marketplace. Today almost all engineering product designers use computer tools for concept development, engineering analysis and model making for prototype production. These time compression tools eventually enable rapid manufacture using computer-controlled machines. If you choose the sandwich route you spend year three on a work placement. Working in a business allows you to apply your knowledge in practice, gain new skills and appreciate the workings of the industry. Our industrial partners provide real life projects for modules and placement opportunities, and actively influence this degree. These include companies such as Gripple, Corus and Eaton Transmission. Your studies are supported with basic mechanical engineering knowledge and by developing innovative and transferable skills.Special facilitiesYou can express individual creativity in your final year project by producing computer models and working prototypes. You have access to our extensive IT and engineering workshop/studio facilities and computer suites. Our equipment base includes * 2D and 3D CAD/CAM software * finite element and finite difference software * rapid prototyping * machining equipment * industry standard software such as ProEngineer.
