About Applied Mathematics / Data Science, BSc - at Inholland University of Applied Sciences
Applied Mathematics/Data Science is a 4-year bachelor programme that develops and trains your skills in mathematics and programming and teaches you to apply them to real-world situations.
The Programme Build-up
Years 1 and 2 are both split up into 4 terms. Each of these terms has a central focus, that guides the maths and IT knowledge you gain towards a specific applicable purpose within the realm of Data Science. You will work on 2 large projects a year, to cover 4 major themes: Data Science, Databases, App development and Web Science. Together with students from Years 2 and 4, you will choose and develop a third project as a team during the Learning Challenge.
In Year 3, it’s time to put all your hard-earned abilities to work and decide where you want to specialise further. The other half of this year will be dedicated to an internship in Holland or abroad. Afterwards, you will be ready to delve deeper and tackle one of the specialisation tracks we offer. You can also do an exchange, or start a minor that suits you elsewhere.
Finally, in Year 4, you will follow a series of expert courses covering several specialised career fields, and finish your programme with a graduation project.
The Course Focus
- Strength in Numbers
Formulas, models and maths. These make up the tools you need to analyse information, solve puzzles and detect patterns. You will learn the techniques to use numbers to your advantage and be able to investigate and manipulate data on a grand scale. - Everything up to Code
Programming is just as vital to today’s Data Scientist and will take up roughly the same amount of time as the maths category. Combined with your new maths skills, you will learn to develop more and more complex coding solutions using Python, Java, SQL and other computer languages. By creating models and apps from code, you’ll give life to data and numbers so they can be applied to real-life situations. - Practice makes Perfect
The first two categories will give you a solid foundation of scientific theory used in Applied Mathematics. Of course, you will put this into practice soon enough and gather experience through observation, application in real and simulated projects, and experimentation. - Beneficial Intelligence
Last but not least, any job requires a set of non-technical soft skills, or professional skills, to fit into the workplace comfortably and with confidence. Like data, this involves being able to analyse and interpret, except in this case, it applies to the people you’ll work with, and the situations that may arise. We will support you in growing as a person, to the extent that you need (and want), into a professional who can easily collaborate, communicate, reflect on themself and others, think critically and learn.
Please note: We try our best to keep the curriculum and our methods continuously up-to-date with the times and the latest in field-related developments. Therefore, a few elements may be readapted along the way. If they are, we can assure you it will only be to further improve the programme!
