About Children and Playwork, BA (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University

This course is ideal if you want to work with children and young people in playful and creative ways. It can also help experienced practitioners move into management or training roles. During the course you learn about playwork ideas and related activities that affect a child's life. Playworkers contribute to children's services in many ways. These include * community and area-based services * children's rights and participation * out-of-school provision * therapeutic playwork * adventure and environmental play. We prepare you to work in the children's workforce. Using the Every Child Mattershttp://www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/ framework, we give you a background to playwork practice that helps you contribute to many aspects of a child's life. You consider play from professional, psychological and sociological perspectives. The course focuses on the 4-14 age group and covers subjects including * healthy childhoods * social and economic dimensions of childhood * safeguarding children * children's participation and involvement * playing environments * risk and resilience * policy and leadership. We use a play-centred approach, making the sessions creative, challenging, stimulating and fun. There is a strong practical emphasis, with assessments linked to real tasks in the workplace. We mix university-based modules with placements, where you put theory into practice. You take two eight-week placements each year in various playwork settings. As well as giving you skills for employment, the course may be used as an entry route for relevant postgraduate qualifications.
