About Geography with Foundation Year at Liverpool John Moores University

About the Foundation Year

The Foundation Year is ideal if you have the ability to study for a degree but don’t have the qualifications to enter directly onto the Geography honours degree programme. Once you pass the Foundation Year you will progress directly onto the first year of the honours degree. If you are a full-time UK student, you will qualify for student financial support for the full duration of your course (subject to eligibility criteria).

About the BSc (Hons) Geography degree

Exploring the way in which our physical environment develops and how humans affect natural processes and interact within the World is the basis of this vocational programme, which offers plenty of opportunities to apply your knowledge in practical contexts.

This degree offers you opportunities for overseas fieldwork, currently including a core Level 5 trip to southern Spain to study desert, river and coastal environments impacted by tourism and horticulture. In Level 6 we also run optional field trips to study tectonically active, volcanic or glacial environments (current destinations are the Greek islands of Crete and Santorini, and Iceland) to study topics such as geohazards, landscape development, environmental change and sustainability.

Not only are these field trips an important aspect of the study of geography, they are also, unsurprisingly, a highlight of the programme for our students. All day and residential field trips for core modules are funded by the University. The Level 6 expeditions are optional and self-funding is required.*

As well as studying a range of highly topical subject areas, you will also have access to the latest GIS software and state-of-the-art field and analytical equipment so that you can hone your analytical skills in the laboratory. The course also offers ample opportunity for work-related learning.

*There are no costs for day field trips for core and optional modules. Residential field-trips associated with core modules will include flights, in country travel and half-board accommodation costs. Optional field-trips will have costs involved. Locations may be subject to change.

Notes about fees for this course

The fees quoted are those for the 2018/19 year as information for 2019/20 is not yet available. The Department for Education (DfE) have recently announced that they will be freezing tuition fees for the 2019/20 academic year. However, this is still subject to the normal parliamentary approval. Once 2019/20 fees are confirmed we will update our web pages accordingly.
