Chemical engineering addresses some of the world’s most pressing challenges: clean energy, safe water, life-saving medicines, sustainable food systems, and advanced materials for modern technology. Combining science, creativity, and problem-solving, chemical engineers design and optimise the processes that underpin daily life. At Keele, you’ll learn from industry experts, developing the skills to design innovative processes that improve lives and shape a more sustainable future.

This four-year Integrated Master’s (MEng) combines undergraduate and postgraduate study in one enhanced degree. You’ll begin with Engineering Fundamentals, building the scientific and technical knowledge to tackle complex problems. Alongside this, Engineering Skills will strengthen your practical ability through labs, workshops, and training in communication and project management, while Engineering Simulation and Mathematics will develop your precision in advanced analysis and modelling. In your fourth year, you will complete master’s-level study, advancing your expertise through specialist modules and a major research project.

Chemical Engineering at Keele combines foundational engineering sciences with specialist study in thermodynamics, reaction kinetics, mass and energy balances, and early exposure to bio-based polymers and nanomaterials. As you progress, you will develop skills in system performance, control, and AI-assisted modelling, addressing complex, real-world applications. In your final years, you will tackle sustainability and circular economy challenges, exploring process and plant design, reactor technologies, and high-value materials including semiconductors, graphene, and engineered biomaterials. You will also develop leadership, teamwork, communication, and research skills through major projects, including an extended Master's-level dissertation or an industry-led project.

In your fourth year, you will explore contemporary topics in chemical engineering and continue your professional development, applying advanced knowledge to solve complex engineering problems. You will be able to choose between two major research projects, one based here at Keele focusing on cutting-edge research, the other industry-led – giving you the flexibility to tailor your degree to your career ambitions. This additional year gives you the chance to build deeper expertise, refine your leadership and teamwork skills, and prepare for senior roles in the sector.

Located in the West Midlands, a region renowned for engineering and manufacturing excellence – the programme draws on a strong industrial base. You’ll benefit from industry-informed teaching, networking opportunities, and access to practical experience through local partnerships and initiatives. Professional practice is embedded throughout, preparing you for the workplace with skills in teamwork, ethics and communication. You’ll also grow personally through Professional Challenge Projects based on real industry scenarios – giving you the chance to apply your learning and stand out in a competitive engineering landscape.
