About Physics with Mathematics, BSc (Hons) - at Keele University

If you're intrigued by the universal principles of physics and the logical beauty of mathematics, our Physics with Mathematics programme explores their deep-rooted connection in understanding how the world works. From acquiring sought after employability skills, to the possibility of spending time in industry, you will graduate with the analytical, critical thinking, programming and teamworking skills that are highly valued by employers in a broad range of sectors. Course overview Physics and Mathematics are deeply connected subjects, and pivotal in gaining insight into how the world works. Mathematics is the essential framework to describe physical phenomena precisely.

Equations and formulae allow relationships between different physical quantities to be expressed, and mathematical models predict the behaviour of systems under various conditions. Physics helps us understand the fundamental laws that govern the universe, from the smallest particles to the largest galaxies. Many technologies we rely on today are based on principles of physics. From powering our world to advancing medicine and technology, physics is at the heart of innovation.

Studying this combination helps develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills and can lead to a more profound comprehension of the subject and the mathematical theories that underpin it, as you will be taught by world-leading researchers in state-of-the-art facilities with plenty of opportunities to apply your learning through real-world scenarios. Course structure In your first year of study, you will develop a solid foundation in core physics concepts exploring topics including gravity, relativity and matter, electricity, magnetism and waves. Building your professional skillset, you will learn the basics of computer programming with python, gain hands on practice in conducting a variety of physical experiments, develop the art of scientific writing and reporting. You will also strengthen your mathematics skills with dedicated modules in calculus and differential equations.

From year two you can also choose a work placement module and further personalise your learning by choosing from a variety of optional modules in topics such as radiation physics, probability and dynamics. As your degree progresses, you will be exposed to more advanced concepts and techniques, such as nuclear and quantum physics, optics and thermodynamics. There will be increased opportunities to apply your learning to real-world problems, whilst you build your professional and employability skills. Between your second and final year, you can choose to take an International Year,  or spend time in industry with a year-long Work Placement.

In your final year you will tackle frontier topics in physics and mathematics and have the opportunity to develop your own research interests, guided by our world-leading researchers. You will have opportunities for individual advanced project work which can be aligned to your own interests and career goals. The physics optional modules allow you to delve deeper into quantum physics and other areas of cutting-edge physics. The range of mathematics optional modules also gives you the choice to further develop advanced physical and mathematical skills in cross-over topics like fluid mechanics and wave propagation. *We have compared the positivity ratings of all participating UK institutions using the NSS 2025 sector data to determine Keele's position relative to other broad-based universities (i.e. excluding specialist institutions and further education colleges).

Physics ranked Top 10 in England (NSS 2025, broad-based universities)* Mathematics is Top 5 for Student Satisfaction in the Complete University Guide 2026 Acquire the advanced techniques and skills to solve real-world problems at the interface of Physics and Mathematics Develop your own research interests and explore frontier topics such as quantum physics, fluid mechanics and wave propagation Benefit from hands-on laboratory work, problem-solving sessions, innovative assessments and small-group tutorials For more details, please see the course page on the Keele website.
