Explore the beauty and power of mathematics in solving complex, real-world problems. From analysing the data of medical trials to deciphering codes, our IMA-accredited programme explores essential mathematical principles, concepts, and applications, along with opportunities to explore areas that interest you most. From?dedicated professional and employability modules to spending time in industry, we'll support you to develop the practical, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills required for a wide variety of careers. Course overview Develop the key problem-solving, logical reasoning and practical skills that employers are looking for with Keele's Mathematics programme, which offers in-depth coverage of the three core disciplines – pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics.
Pure mathematics focuses on mathematical proof, logical argument and abstraction, applied mathematics is concerned with methods and their application to modelling real-world problems, and statistics involves mathematical modelling of uncertainty and the analysis of data. Throughout the programme you'll apply your learning to real-world phenomena or experiences, providing context to your learning and strengthening your understanding. You'll also have the chance to align your studies to your passions by choosing from a variety of optional modules. During your first year, you'll build a strong foundation in mathematical thinking with modules in algebra, calculus, and differential equations, as well as developing your skills in data analysis using the statistical software R.
You'll also begin to develop key employability skills by working in teams on group projects, solving problems and communicating your findings in visual ways. In year two, you will strengthen your knowledge in pure and applied mathematics, probability and statistics, whilst expanding your skillset by learning the programming language Python. Focusing on your employability skills, you will have the opportunity to spend time in industry with both full time and modular placement opportunities. You will also build on your professional and transferable skills with extended problem work, report writing, effective communication of mathematical results, and collaboration with others.
In your final year you can undertake a substantial piece of research, applying theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, research or business problem. Your research project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation and project management. From exploring financial mathematics and medical statistics, to undertaking a placement in a school or college, - you will also have the opportunity to personalise your studies to suit your career aspirations or interests. Specialised pathways Our programme is highly flexible as you can tailor the degree to suit your individual preferences.
Our specialised pathways enable you to focus in the areas of applied mathematics, pure mathematics, and mathematics with statistics.?By choosing a bracketed degree, you will gain recognition of your specialism in the title of your final award. As we recognise that your aspirations and interests in the field of mathematics may develop as you are exposed to the diverse themes throughout the programme, you can transfer between our programmes before year two of your studies, to give you the time and space to find your passion?(so long as any compulsory modules of the new programme have been taken).
