If you're fascinated by the logical beauty of mathematics and the practical capabilities of computing, our Computer Science and Mathematics programme explores their intrinsic connection in tackling real-world challenges. With industry placements and specialist modules focused on professional skills development and employability, you'll graduate equipped with the theoretical knowledge, professional insights, and practical abilities to tackle a range of challenges across various sectors. Course overview Course overview As many real-world computational problems are interdisciplinary in nature and solving them requires skills and techniques from both computer science and mathematics, there is high demand for graduates with the theoretical foundations, professional understanding and practical skills required to create the systems of the future. Computer Science and Mathematics at Keele will support you in learning a variety of techniques and skills from these closely connected disciplines, allowing you to solve a diverse range of scientific and technical problems across various sectors.
Course structure Your first year will introduce you to core topics in both computing and mathematics, including programming, computer systems, algorithms, sets, functions and proofs, calculus, algebra, and differential equations. During year two you will continue to build your understanding of core topics. From databases and scientific computing to differential equations, you will strengthen your learning by applying your knowledge to real-world scenarios. You also have the opportunity to tailor the programme to your career aspirations by choosing from a variety of optional modules including computer graphics and animation.
From year two you can choose to spend time in industry with full time or modular placement opportunities. You can also hear from industry guest speakers and develop invaluable professional and employability skills. In your final year you will unleash your creativity and undertake an individual project involving computer science and mathematics. The project will enable you to apply theoretical knowledge and problem-solving skills to a technical, software, programming, research or business problem.
Your project is an excellent opportunity for you to draw together skills in experimental study design, critical interpretation of data, presentation, project management and critical thinking. Advanced core modules in partial differential equations and AI will strengthen your analytical skills and teach you how to use machine learning tools and techniques to analyse real-world data. Learn sought-after skills from these interconnected fields and use them to tackle diverse scientific and technical problems in various sectors Tailor the degree to suit your career aspirations, with a wide choice of modules from computer science, applied and pure mathematics Mathematics is Top 5 for Student Satisfaction in the Complete University Guide 2026 Be career ready by gaining transferrable, professional and employability skills Enhance your employability by learning to programme in Python For more details, please see the course page on the Keele website.
