To help you prepare for an exciting career, you may have the opportunity to undertake a one-year paid placement. Our Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) will provide you with extensive support to help you find a placement and has longstanding relationships with an impressive and diverse range of companies. These include Bloomberg, Microsoft, Barclays, JP Morgan, Disney, IBM and more. Placements are paid up to £25,000 pro rata per year, with some organisations choosing to exceed this.

Our graduates are highly sought after. Some of our recent alumni have gone on to graduate roles at high-profile organisations, such as American Express, Close Brothers Group, Debenhams, FDM, SBC Systems, Sainsbury's, Roofoods and KPMG.


Good performance in certain modules can lead to exemption recommendations from professional examinations of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements

Typical requirements:

  • 'A' Level: AAB, including grade A in Mathematics or Further Mathematics
  • Tariff: 136 UCAS tariff points, including grade A in 'A' Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics
  • BTEC: DD with an 'A' Level grade A in Mathematics
  • IB: 34 points total, including Higher Level Mathematics at grade 6.

In addition, the following is required:

  • GCSE: A minimum of grade 4 (C) in English.

Other suitable qualifications

  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): We welcome applications that include the EPQ. Where relevant, this may be included in our offer, resulting in an 'A' Level offer reduced by one grade.
  • Mixed qualifications: Please email us to check your combination and to find out what requirements we would have for your specific combination of qualifications.

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.

INTO City, University of London

Don't meet the entry requirements? INTO City, University of London offers a range of academic and English language programmes to help prepare you for study at City, University of London. You'll learn from experienced teachers in a dedicated international study centre.

City works in partnership with KIC London to provide a range of preparatory courses for international students. KIC London courses offer comprehensive support to students - including regular one-to-one tuition. Students who successfully complete the KIC London Foundation course at the required level have a guaranteed progression route to City, University of London degree courses.

English requirements

  • GCSE: A minimum of grade 4 (C) in English.
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.
  • PTE Academic: 58 overall with a minimum of 50 in each component.

Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City courses on a part-time basis.

How to apply

Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.

You can apply to up to five universities or institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City University London is C60.

Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.

UCAS has implemented an 'invisibility of choices' policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institution can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.

You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £23 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University of London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £12.

When to apply

Your application for entry in September 2018 should arrive at UCAS between September 2017 and 15th January 2018. Applications that arrive after 15th January 2018 will be considered only at City's discretion.

When your application is acknowledged by UCAS, you will be sent a personal identification number so that you can access your records via Track on the UCAS website.

Teaching and learning

The Mathematics BSc (Hons) at City is an inspiring degree, delivered in a supportive, energised environment by experienced, knowledgeable academic staff engaged in cutting-edge research.

Our teaching and learning methods are designed to develop your knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject while stimulating your engagement and participation in the learning process. You will be supported and encouraged to take responsibility for your own learning and develop your academic self-confidence.

To ease the transition from secondary education to undergraduate study, we provide small weekly group tutorials in the first year. These provide intensive individual assistance for core module topics. In the final year, you will carry out your own research project chosen from a wide variety of mathematical topics.

Past research projects have included everything from the mathematical theory of information and life-saving mathematics in medical imaging, through to wallpaper patterns and determining the number of guards required in an art gallery.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed using a variety of methods, depending on module choices:

  • Practice Assessment Document (PAD): used to demonstrate achievement of practice competencies and also to record the number of hours of practice experience
  • Written assignments, including essays: these may take the form of care studies in which you will be expected to relate your essay to a particular service user or as support another assessment such as a poster presentation
  • Written examinations: including short answer questions, multiple choice questions, calculations, scenario based
  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs): practical skills assessments which enable you to demonstrate particular clinical, communication or teaching skills
  • Dissertation: this final project will enable you to choose a relevant topic of interest to you and demonstrate an in depth knowledge of this.

Percentage of the course assessed by coursework

The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose. The approximate percentage of the course assessment, based on 2016/17 entry is as follows:

Feedback on assessment

You will normally be provided with feedback within three weeks of the submission deadline or assessment date. This would normally include a provisional grade or mark. For end-of-module examinations or an equivalent significant task (e.g. an end of module project), feedback will normally be provided within four weeks.

The timescale for feedback on final-year projects or dissertations may be longer.

The first year of your degree is devoted to core material, including basic programming and statistics to give you a solid foundation in modern mathematics. On completing the first year, you will be able to discuss the underlying concepts and principles of mathematics, programming and statistics and to apply these to specific problems.

In the second year, you can pursue your interests further by choosing from an increasing range of options. On completing the second year, you will be able to build on your previous knowledge and experience from year one. You will master more advanced mathematical techniques and will be able to apply these to real-life problem-solving.

In the final year, most modules are optional and a number of speciality modules covering an assortment of topics are available as you pursue your interests even further. On completing the final year, you will further develop a systematic and detailed knowledge and understanding of advanced mathematics. You will have access to modules which draw on current mathematics research and will be exposed to new areas of mathematics with applications in finance, biology and physics.

Year 1

The first year consists of modules that make up 125 credits.

You will take the following core modules:

  • Functions, Vectors and Calculus (30 credits)
  • Algebra (15 credits)
  • Programming and Computational Mathematics (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Probability and Statistics (15 credits)
  • Logic and Set Theory (15 credits)
  • Number Theory and Cryptography (15 credits)
  • Introduction to Modelling (15 credits)
  • Skills, Careers and Employability Analysis for Mathematics Students (5 credits)

You will take the following elective module:

  • Microplacements (0 credits)

Year 2

The second year consists of modules that make up 120 credits. There are six compulsory modules and you choose one elective module.

Compulsory core modules (15 credits each unless otherwise stated):

  • Linear Algebra
  • Real and Complex Analysis (30 credits)

  • Sequences and Series
  • Applied Mathematics
  • Numerical Mathematics.

In year two, you have the opportunity to begin to tailor the course to your preferences via an elective module. You will choose either of the below.

  • Decision Analysis (15 credits)
  • Applications of Probability and Statistics (15 credits).

Year 3

Part three consists of modules that make up 120 credits.

There are three compulsory modules:

  • Advanced complex analysis (15 credits)
  • Differential equations (30 credits)
  • Group project (15 credits).

You will also choose 60 credits from our range of elective modules to focus on your areas of interest. The themes on offer are:

Most contact hours will take the form of lectures, interactive sessions, practical workshops and small group classes, supported by a personal tutorial system. * The tuition fee for UK and EU students is determined by the UK Government and was £9,250 for the first year of study at City in 2017/18. The tuition fee for students commencing their studies in 2018/19 has not yet been confirmed: we will update these pages as soon as we receive confirmation. Fees in each subsequent year of study may be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government's Office for Budget Responsibility. However, this is subject to confirmation. The index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. If fees do increase in each subsequent year of study, we will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study. Fees in each subsequent year of study will be subject to an annual increase limited by the All Items Retail Prices Index.

At City, you will have the option to choose a work placement, enabling you to gain professional experience working on real-life projects. After successfully completing your second year of studies, you will have the opportunity to find a one-year placement of nine to fifteen months, before returning to City to complete your final year. If you complete a placement, you will graduate with a BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Placement degree.

Students that complete a placement year have been found to be more likely to achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.

To help you find a placement in your field of interest, the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering has its very own dedicated placements team - the Professional Liaison Unit (PLU). The PLU provides you with placement, internship support and guidance throughout your studies. The PLU team has longstanding relationships with an impressive range of companies - spanning both large and small organisations, including start-ups in Tech City.

As part of a placement, you may have the opportunity to contribute to high-end projects, such as assisting with the budget-planning for a blockbuster movie. Our mathematics students  have previously secured placements and internships at organisations such as Axa, Barclays, Bloomberg, Disney, EY, GE Capital, IBM, J.P. Morgan, Microsoft, Toyota and Warner Music.

You also have the option to take a summer internship on completion of each academic year.
