The MEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering course will prepare you for an exciting and rewarding career in the global aerospace industry, working to improve the efficiency, reliability, safety and sustainability of future aircraft.
Who is it for?
This course prepares students for an exciting and rewarding career in the global aerospace industry, working on manned and unmanned aircraft and spacecraft projects. This degree places particular emphasis on encouraging and enabling students to be innovative in their engineering design.
The course is designed in collaboration with industry, which is directly reflected in the emphasis on the professional and transferrable skills you will learn. The MEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering degree has been developed to educate you in the design, analysis and testing of aeronautical and aerospace vehicles and associated technology.
City was the first institution in the UK to introduce Aeronautical Engineering courses. The department has strong links with industry (local, national and global), maintaining partnerships through research projects and student placements. You will have the opportunity to undertake a year of industrial placement, which is a great way to get first-hand experience of the aeronautics industry.
Our approach is to encourage critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study. The design exercises provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in cross-disciplinary challenges, preparing the way for tackling larger problems that span traditional engineering boundaries.
Accredited regularly by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Royal Aeronautical Society (RaeS), on behalf of the Engineering Council, as fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.

How to apply
Applications for degree courses must be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). You can apply through your school or college using the Apply system, which enables you to submit your application directly to the UCAS website.
You can apply to up to five universities or institutions on the form. The UCAS code for City, University of London is C60.
Please take care to enter the correct course code when applying, particularly for subjects with a Foundation year or with BEng (Hons) and MEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) and MSci (Hons) options.
UCAS has implemented an 'invisibility of choices' policy so that, on the initial application and while you are receiving decisions, each institution can see only their entry and not those of other institutions you have chosen. This ensures that your application for a course at City is considered solely on your academic and personal qualities.
You should submit your completed application form to UCAS with a £23 application fee. If you want to apply to City, University of London only, you can make a single choice application at a reduced rate of £12.
When to apply
Your application for entry in September 2018 should arrive at UCAS between September 2017 and 15th January 2018. Applications that arrive after 15th January 2018 will be considered only at City's discretion.

Teaching and learning
The course is delivered through lectures, tutorials, group design exercises, laboratory classes, workshops and field trips. Learning involves a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational study.
Assessment is by coursework and examinations. Group learning and communication skills are addressed through design studies and presentations. Practical and technical skills are assessed through laboratory work, data analysis and project reports.
Grades obtained in each year count towards the final degree classification, with increasing weight given to the later years.

In Part 4 MEng students will be involved in design project, which is a key part of the integrated Master's degree action as a transition from formal education to professional life. Project work embraces not only the technical aspects of design using advanced engineering tools but develops professional skills such as management, team building and business. The focus of all the projects is the delivery of a substantial machine or device in an international context, incorporating the latest thinking in technology as supported by our engineering research activities. Motivation levels in such projects are extremely high and the experience offers graduates opportunities to excel in job interviews with project achievements as exemplars of what they have delivered.
Year one is common to all of the engineering courses. Students study the science (largely physics) and mathematics that underpin engineering principles. They are also instructed in how to develop computer programs to (i) solve numerical analysis problems and (ii) control mechatronic systems. Group exercises provide students with the opportunities to undertake preliminary engineering designs.

Students begin to specialise in Aeronautical Engineering in year two, advancing their knowledge of solid and fluid mechanics while also studying measurement, data analysis and mechatronics.

The third year places increasing emphasis on aircraft design. Modules include aerodynamics and propulsion, flight dynamics and control, structural analysis and thermodynamics and heat transfer.

The final year of the integrated Masters involves a major individual research project and group design exercises and modules covering variety of topics including advanced structural analysis and heat transfer, advanced computational fluid dynamics etc. Students can select one of the following options: European Global Product Design (EGPR), Formula Student, Aircraft Design Project or Gas Turbine project. Please note that project availability may vary year to year dependent on student cohort size, demand and resource constraints.

Contact hours are made up of: lectures, which direct you towards the most important topics in the field and which allow discussion and clarification of areas of uncertainty with expert staff; tutorials where staff are on hand to help with problem-solving exercises; laboratory and workshop classes where practical situations and methods are encountered; and research or design/build projects, both individually and in groups, where personal skills, teamwork, creativity and critical thinking are developed and where knowledge built up elsewhere in the programme is integrated and developed.

The integrated MEng (Hons) degree offers the most direct route to achieving Chartered Engineer (CEng) professional registration.
Aeronautical Engineering graduates work in all areas of the aircraft and airline industries and in other high-tech industries, such as motor manufacturing, F1 design, tall building design and offshore oil and gas extraction.
Careers in aeronautical engineering in the UK are provided by larger companies such as AgustaWestland Helicopters,Airbus, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and QinetiQ as well as many successful specialist companies that supply components and services.
Several Aeuronautical Engineering graduates move on to a career in flying.

* The tuition fee for UK and EU students is determined by the UK Government and was £9,250 for the first year of study at City in 2017/18. The tuition fee for students commencing their studies in 2018/19 has not yet been confirmed: we will update these pages as soon as we receive confirmation. Fees in each subsequent year of study may be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government's Office for Budget Responsibility. However, this is subject to confirmation. The index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. If fees do increase in each subsequent year of study, we will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study. Fees in each subsequent year of study will be subject to an annual increase limited by the All Items Retail Prices Index.
** The tuition fee for Non-UK/non-EU students is £16,830 for the first year of study in 2018/19. Each subsequent year of study may be subject to annual increase, as detailed above for UK and EU students, but this is also subject to confirmation.

Our team of placement specialists, the Professional Liaison Unit, has extensive experience in helping students to secure professional experience across a range of industries. You can undertake a summer internship at the end of each academic year or opt to spend a year on an industry placement at the end of your third year - if you are on the MEng (Hons) route.
Placements are paid, and are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.
Placements are highly encouraged at City; students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to; achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.
MEng students are strongly encouraged to take a 12-month industrial placement between the end of year three and the start of their final year. Specialist advisors within the School are in regular contact with companies to assist students in finding suitable work experience. Student s are paid while on placement and are visited by their personal tutor during this time. Following placement, students more fully appreciate the context and relevance of their university studies and gain a greater understanding of the industry they are about to join. Wind Turbine Design Challenge at City
The week long competition was set up for teams of undergraduate mechanical and aeronautics engineering students to design, construct and test a small wind turbine with pasta tower, plastic pipe blades and gears with metal raw material for lifting a 2,5kg weight.
