About MSc Green Building, MSc - at Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT)

Develop a deep understanding and confidence around sustainable design principles and sustainable materials, their regulatory and legal requirements and their practical use.

You will also acquire a rigorous understanding of the social, practical, political, economic and environmental aspects of green building.

CAT’s unique study experience combines hands-on practical learning with in-depth academic study and flexible study options.

Get practical experience of sustainable building materials and methods and learn the theory behind the selection and use of materials, energy flows, site selection and preparation phases, waste management and project management.

The MSc will end with a 60-credit individual design project comprising a technical report and critical evaluation. This provides the opportunity to complete your studies through focusing on a topic or project of your choosing.

When studying this course as an MSc you will need to study the 30 credit Sustainability and Adaptation: Concepts and Planning module plus 3 additional core modules and 3 optional modules before undertaking a design based dissertation. This course is created and delivered by CAT and is offered subject to revalidation by the University of East London. The course is due to be reviewed in early 2022 so this description of the course is as its currently delivered. Some aspects may change before the start of the 2022 academic year.

The taught eight-week modules offer an immersive learning experience through lectures, talks, seminars and workshops delivered by our expert in-house staff, with specialist insights from visiting lecturers from industry and academia.

Practical sessions are part of the programme of module teaching weeks at CAT, allowing you to get hands-on with sustainable building materials and energy efficiency.

Many modules are shared with our other postgraduate courses, providing you with a rich learning experience with your peers.

Distance and blended learning

Students can decide on a module-by-module basis whether they want to study on-site or via distance. Allowing you more flexibility to fit study around your life and existing commitments.

Our distance learning resources are also available to students studying on-site. Students studying on-site or via distance will be able to interact and share ideas and expertise via the online learning environment and discussion apps, helping to create a richer learning environment.

Flexible study options

Courses can be studied full or part time and our courses structure allows you to choose the mode and level of study that suits you, helping you fit your studies around other commitments.

Full-time study at MSc level will allow you to complete the course in 18 months. Part-time study at MSc level will allow you to complete the course over a recommended 3 years.

Entry requirements

MSc Green Building is intended to cater for a broad range of interests. For acceptance onto the programme the following requirements apply:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Students who do not possess formal qualifications but who can demonstrate that they have gained appropriate knowledge and skills equivalent to degree standard and that they will benefit from and contribute to the programme, may be accepted - if you're unsure if you meet this requirement, please get in touch.
  • In the case of applicants whose first language is not English, then IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) is required.
