James Watson, Harald zur Hausen, Sir Tim Hunt and Sir Paul Nurse. Four powerful names of esteemed, internationally acclaimed scientists with two things in common:
The Cyprus School of Molecular Medicine (CSMM) is the postgraduate school of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics (CING), a leading research centre in the region. The School offers MSc and PhD programs in Molecular Medicine, Medical Genetics, Neuroscience and Biomedical Research. The programs are suitable for graduates with a background in medicine, biological and related sciences, genetics, neuroscience, biomedicine, chemistry and other related fields, who would like to progress to MSc or PhD level. The CING has the largest and most technologically developed research infrastructure in Cyprus and the neighboring area in the sectors of neurology, genetics, biomedical, medical and related sciences, offering the CSMM’s students a plethora of research opportunities, supported through competitive research grants obtained from national and international funding bodies. The CSMM provides an unrivalled educational experience to students, who can expect to be taught and mentored by the leading Biomedical Scientists and Neurologists in Cyprus, while also working alongside them in their respective laboratories. The Institute’s highly specialised departments include neurology clinics, units such as the Biostatistics Unit amongst others and the following diagnostic laboratory departments: Electron Microscopy/Molecular Pathology, Molecular Virology, Biochemical Genetics, Cytogenetics & Genomics, Molecular Genetics Thalassaemia, Cardiovascular Genetics & Forensic Genetics, Neurogenetics and Molecular Genetics, Function & Therapy and the Bioinformatics Group.
Since its first year of operation in 2012, the CSMM has hosted four of the most influential and innovative scientists, who upon visiting the School, which is housed within the CING, have all praised the combination of taught courses and hands-on work experience within the same environment.
Are you a graduate or undergraduate trying to increase your chances of employment? More than likely you have heard the same request repeatedly from future employers, “Do you have work experience?” Students of the CSMM do not need to worry about this, since they have hands-on work experience which is vital for a strong CV in today’s competitive job market. The School’s graduates are fully prepared for employment through their daily interaction in a professional work environment, which offers research and services alongside education as well as through the professional seminars on essential skills that are provided to them during their studies. Furthermore, each academic course has been developed based upon both learning objectives and employment objectives. This ensures that the CSMM delivers fully equipped graduates to the job market, an objective which has been proven through the high employment rates of its alumni.
The MSc programs are organised around taught courses (including tutorial sessions for each course on a weekly basis) and a library or research project carried out in the Institute’s departments. The CSMM offers MSc programs in full-time mode (13 months) and in part-time mode (24 months). The Biomedical Research program has a two-year duration, with an emphasis on laboratory-based work.
The PhD programs are organised around taught courses, (including tutorial sessions for each course on a weekly basis during year 1) and a research project (thesis work) carried out in the Institute’s departments. The CSMM offers four-year doctoral programs which can be extended to a maximum of six years for completion of the thesis work.
All programs are taught in English and the CSMM has a vibrant student population including international students. Over the years, the school has accepted applications from 41 different countries around the world and has welcomed students from Australia, Cyprus, Egypt, England, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Russia, Syria and Yemen.
The programs of the CSMM are fully accredited in Cyprus and recognized internationally. For countries requiring their own accreditation procedure, the CSMM has achieved accreditation from the Sultanate of Oman, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the People’s Republic of China.
The CSMM holds the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education awarded by the European Commission, giving our students and Faculty Members the opportunity to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility scheme. Participation is also offered to our alumni within the first year of their graduation from the CSMM, providing valuable opportunities to acquire international work experience, which will enrich their CV and give them a great advantage in the job market.
