Abertay University: Putting International Students First

By Abertay University

Studying abroad is a fantastic but challenging experience, particularly if this is your first experience of living in another country. Our International English Foundation Programme is designed to provide you with the academic and English competence necessary to gain entry onto a degree programme at the university. It will help you to understand what university life is like as you develop and practice the skills you need for academic success, improve your English, and of course, meet other international students. You’ll also have the opportunity to study subject modules alongside local students so that you’ll really feel you’re part of the Abertay family.

Abertay University is an internationally renowned modern university based in the centre of Dundee. As a campus university of approximately 5000 students we are a close-knit community, and staff and students can easily take advantage of both the university’s state-of-the-art facilities and the city’s many amenities. The English for International Students team is accredited by the British Council for the teaching of English and provides courses that are specifically tailored to potential Abertay students and the degrees they plan to study. We pride ourselves on offering high quality, flexible programmes in English for Academic Purposes, and our class sizes, individual tutorial support and range of student services and activities means that we develop relationships with our students that last throughout their university careers and beyond.

Dundee itself is an historic city on the banks of the river Tay, less than two hours from both major Scottish airports. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, it is also a vibrant modern city with many cultural and sporting activities to get involved in, and a wide range of restaurants and other places to socialise. It is a safe, student-friendly place and has the lowest cost of living of any university town in Scotland.

Who is the IEFP for?
It is for people who have finished high school and require an additional academic and English qualification to gain entry onto a degree at the university. Successful completion of the IEFP guarantees you entry onto the majority of our undergraduate degree courses.

So what will I study?
This is a full-time course with lectures, seminars and individual tutorials; each English language class normally has no more than 14 students.
Classes focus on developing the four skills:

  • Writing: including understanding and planning different assignments, using sources, developing research skills, and improving your grammatical accuracy
  • Reading: strategies to help you to read academic books, journal articles and internet sources more quickly and effectively
  • Listening: strategies for both formal settings such as lectures, and informal discussions and conversations
  • Speaking: including giving academic presentations and taking part in seminars

Additionally, we aim to develop your language skills so you can communicate with confidence in and out of class.

However, successful study in the UK also involves other skills, particularly critical thinking, independent learning and academic literacy. This is why the course incorporates subject modules, which you will attend with local students. You can choose from two foundation routes: Study for Science, or Study for Social Science. On each route you will study one core module and will also select a Business, Computing or Health and Sports Science module. This aspect of the programme helps to make the IEFP unique, as these modules are accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and are taught by subject lecturers, not language teachers.  They provide invaluable academic experience before you begin your degree, and also allow you to really discover what it’s like to be a student at Abertay and to get to know a wide range of people who study here at the university.

The course begins on January 12th 2015 and finishes on August 14th 2015; it is divided into two terms, with specific weeks dedicated to feedback, exams and vacations.

Entry requirements
You need to graduate high school in your own country with good grades, and to have a minimum of IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.
