About Earth and Environment at Wageningen University and Research

The master's programme Earth and Environment in Wageningen teaches students about the physical, chemical and/or ecological processes in soils, water and the atmosphere from an Earth Sciences perspective at different time and spatial scales. Challenges like climate change, food security and the provision of water require in depth knowledge of these processes. You will learn about the interactions between the different spheres. But you will also specialise in either Hydrology and Water Resources; Meteorology and Air Quality; Biology and Chemistry of Soil and Water or Soil Geography and Earth Surface Dynamics.

    Robin Houwen did both her bachelor's and master's in Food Technology at Wageningen University. During her master's she tried as often as possible to combine the technical and consumer sides of foodstuffs and product development.

    I tried to make a sort of gel from unsaturated fat that could serve as a replacement structure at room temperature.Thesis

    “My thesis was about making gels from oil. Saturated fat in products ensures structure because it forms fat crystals. However, saturated fat is unhealthy, so you want to substitute it with unsaturated fat. The only thing is unsaturated fat is liquid at room temperature, and therefore does not provide any structure to a product. Therefore, I tried to make a sort of gel from unsaturated fat that could serve as a replacement structure at room temperature. I was therefore not working on a product, but I was able to go a step further in fundamental research.”

    Internship

    Robin wanted to do her internship at a large company abroad. She was successful in this. “I did my internship at Mondelez International in Munich. It is a company that makes a lot of snack products such as Milka, Oreo and Philadelphia. I worked on a project with whey protein concentrate there. From milk you can make whey, and from that you can make a concentrate. It can be used for various purposes; it is often used as a source of protein in products. I mainly looked into how the viscosity (syrupiness) depends on, for example, the pH and temperature of a process. I joined the day-to-day life in the company, which I found a lot better than doing research! I’m not a fan of going really deep into something and finding out why something doesn’t work. I would rather spend time on finding out how things do work, and that is the focus of companies.”

    Student Ernest Aliche - MSc Plant Science

    Ernest first heard of the master's Plant Sciences through the Paul Speijer Scholarship Foundation, a foundation that gives scholarships to African students studying Plant Sciences in Wageningen.

    I would like to work on a topic that has to do with improving crop species for a higher yield in stressed conditions.

    “I first heard about Wageningen University through a friend’s Facebook message. I had studied Botany during my bachelor's in my home country. I wanted to study more deeply to the point of applying the knowledge to solve practical problems in the area of boosting food production and food quality. Plant Sciences offers practical research and that study fits my career choice. Wageningen University, therefore, offered the avenue for realising this, so I decided to come here by God’s provision through the scholarship from Anne van den Ban Fonds.”

    Study programme

    In his study programme, Ernest specialises in Plant Breeding. “I like the study programme I chose. Students are able to choose their own courses, which makes the program very flexible. Therefore, I could choose courses in improved breeding of crop varieties, the basis for boosting food production and quality, which fits my career choice. I really like the course Plant Biotechnology, because it offered me the opportunity to learn the current trends in biotechnology and to genetically modify the model plant tobacco. Currently, I am doing my thesis, and I am practically applying the things I learned during the courses and I am also learning new things.”

    Student life

    Living in Wageningen is totally different from living in Ernest’s home country, Nigeria. “Living in Wageningen is like living in all the continents of the world at the same time. There are lots of international faces, cultures, colours, languages and so on. Furthermore, the main differences with my home country are the weather, which is erratic, the seasons and day lengths, which are not steady, the fact that everybody is fond of the sun and that everybody uses a bicycle.”

    Next to his studies, Ernest likes to make music. “I am part of different gospel musical groups in Amazing Grace Parish in Wageningen and International Christian Fellowship.”

    In the future, Ernest would like to do a PhD. “I would like to work on a topic that has to do with improving crop species for a higher yield in stressed conditions.”

    Nicola Costanzi - MSc Biobased Sciences

    Nicola is an Italian student from the Biobased Sciences programme. Before coming to Wageningen, he worked for some companies and participated in different projects in South Africa and India. After all of these experiences, he decided to do a master's to get a practical application for all the skills he learned during his work years.

    The master's fitted my interest in resource recovery and the activities that I would like to do in future.

    “My name is Nicola and I come from a village in the North of Italy. I am 27, so a bit older than the standard age for master's students at Wageningen University. This is since I did many different things before coming here. At the moment, I am following the Master's Biobased Science with a specialisation in Biorefinery and Conversion”.

    Could you please tell us about your educational background?

    "After finishing high school, I went to England for one year to learn English. After that, I studied Environmental Sciences at Avans Hogeschool in Breda for 4 years. In the last year of my studies, I went to India and South Africa for my internship and worked there on several projects. In the time following, I went back to Italy and worked for two companies on different environmental projects. Two years later, I decided to come to Wageningen to do this master's and get a more technical application of what I learned before".

    What influence your choice to study at Wageningen University?

    “I came to Wageningen because I have heard that it is one of the world’s top universities. The master's fitted my interests and the activities that I would like to do in future. I like the education style here since the approach is more practical. Also, the environment at the university is very good, there are a lot of nice people and it is easy to feel at home. In the beginning, I did not know what to expect from the programme, but I liked the courses I took during the first period since they were integrating different fields that are important to form a biobased economy”.

    Do you do any activities alongside your studies?

    “Next to studying, I like being in nature. I like to go cycling, especially when it is sunset time. But I miss the mountains here. In Italy, I usually went mountain biking, but here in the Netherlands I only have a normal city bike”.

    What are your long-term plans?

    After my study, I would love to become a ‘next generation’ farmer with a small biorefinery on my land where I make my own products.

    I would like to be independent and have my own activities. I hope to become an example for others and collaborate with local farmers and companies to make this dream come true. I would prefer to do it in Italy, because of the nice weather and of course because it is my home country”.
