The University of Windsor offers two distinct Master of Fine Arts programs:
MFA, Visual Arts
The Master of Fine Arts Program at the University of Windsor is a two-year, studio-centered program geared towards creative exploration, innovative experimentation and the development of a sustainable artistic practice. The program provides graduate students with a critical and theoretical framework that enables the independent development of artistic research and studio production that is supported by a range of dynamic faculty, visiting artists, curators and critics. Windsor's School of Creative Arts | Visual Arts has one of the longest running MFA programs in Canada, founded in 1979. University of Windsor MFA graduates have gone on to establish significant careers as visual artists, educators, curators and arts professionals.
Our program is distinguished for its focus on intensive graduate supervision, spacious facilities and openness to unconventional practices. We encourage a multi-disciplinary approach to art that enables students to experiment with a variety of media and methods to discover those best suited to realizing their creative projects. Recently these have ranged from video installation, audio responsive installation, performance, social practice, bio art, and urban intervention.
MFA, Film and Media Arts
The School of Creative Arts also offers an MFA in Film and Media Arts program. Like the MFA in Visual Arts, the MFA in Film and Media Arts focuses on studio production with an emphasis on multidisciplinary collaboration. Students are expected to create films and multimedia works in a variety of genres en route to developing a thesis project.
Our faculty have established national and international reputations, exhibiting, performing, and screening films regularly in Canada and abroad. Currently, School of Creative Arts faculty members are working on a range of externally funded projects that explore multimedia performance, the intersection of art and biotechnology, ecology, architecture, documentary film, and urban culture. We encourage applications from artists working in a wide variety of contemporary practices.
Fees are an estimation and are based on tuition for sixteen (16) months or four (4) academic terms. Does not include Incidental Fees ($2,000*), Textbooks ($2,000*), Living Expenses and Meals ($12,000*).

Entrance to the MFA programs at the University of Windsor is a competitive process. We look for dynamic and creative individuals who demonstrate strong potential for creative work at the graduate level. Applications that meet the minimum requirements (listed below) are vetted on the basis of portfolio submissions. We accept only a small number of applicants each year.
Application Procedures and Requirements:
1. Begin your online application with the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
2. Applicants for either Master of Fine Arts programs must satisfy and upload all of the following requirements through the Electronic Graduate Application System (EGAS);
3. Have an Honours B.A. with a major in Visual Arts or Media Arts (or from equivalent undergraduate programs in cognate disciplines who are engaged in the study of art and/or, culture)
4. Have attained at least a B standing in undergraduate courses;
5. Have successfully completed course work in art history, visual culture or related cultural theory; (applicants my be considered for the program with teh stipulation that deficiences be made up);
6. Present transcripts of all university and /or college-level work;
7. Present three letters of recommendation.
8. A 500-word letter of intent outlining your studio interests, why you are interested in pursuing an MFA at the University of Windsor, and what kind of work you plan to produce in the program.
9. A recent C.V.
10. English Proficiency Tests: For applicants whose native language is not English, a minimum score of 220 on the TOEFL English proficiency test or 6.5 on the IELTS is required.
11. A portfolio of recent work must be sent directly to the School of Creative Arts. [see portfolio specifications below]
12. Applications for admission to the Master of Fine Arts programs must be complete by February 1st to be considered for financial awards from the Office of Graduate Studies. These awards are tenable for two academic years and begin each September. In exceptional circumstances, we may consider applications before or after this deadline, although we can only guarantee consideration for funding for applications received by the February 1st deadline
