Course Overview
The single honours programme will provide you with comprehensive knowledge and skills in understanding how and why people behave in the ways they do and the ability to apply that knowledge in a variety of individual and group settings.
You will explore the link between psychological theory, research and practice, with a focus on producing a scientific understanding of the links between the mind, brain, behaviour and experience, and how we can try to influence these processes to improve individual, organisational, and societal health and wellbeing.
The programme has a strong emphasis on developing psychological research skills and an understanding of research ethics, culminating in an independent final year research project.
The programme will explore issues such as:
- How do humans communicate in society and how is this changing in the face of technology and social media?
- How does the human brain influence the ways that we think, feel and behave?
- How can we apply our knowledge of the ways in which people think, feel and behave in order to tackle problems in society?
- How can we promote physical and psychological well being and encourage individuals to behave in a healthier way?
- What can be done to help in the treatment of mental illness?
In addition, this single honours Psychology degree will equip students with a strong set of critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills, plus many other transferable skills considered desirable by employers and post-graduate courses.
Students will develop strong IT and numeracy skills as well as strong critical writing skills. The nature of assessments within the single honours degree will provide students with experience of presenting work through a variety of media such as oral and written presentations. The development of team-working skills and independent learning are carefully supported throughout the degree.
