Course Overview

The programme will offer a range of options allows specialised work in such fields as the history of Christian thought, Hindu traditions and rituals, monotheistic religions, eastern traditions and Islam and Christianity in dialogue. This course will also enable you to explore religion as a major component in the contemporary world, dealing with issues surrounding gender, conflict, pluralism, secularism and post-modernism.

As well as being a fascinating subject in its own right, Theology & Religious Studies has relevance for those wishing to pursue careers in fields such as education, social services, media, diplomacy, or business. The programme also prepares its students for vocations that may include ministerial and ecclesiastical vocations in a variety of denominations.

The programmes are designed to offer a solid programme of study for students whether from a faith background or from those who have no faith but wish to explore questions raised by theological study . Assessment

The School uses a wide range of assessment methods so that students develop a variety of skills that will stand them in good stead in the professional world. In addition to traditional essay assessments, the school uses learning journals, book reviews, textual analyses, group presentations and examinations. For instance on the School's popular study tours to religious sites students are able to submit a learning journal of their experiences. Other modules require students to work together in groups, make presentations and creatively explore the interface between media and religion.

Learning and Teaching methods

The programme offer introductory, intermediate modules that enhance knowledge and understanding, and more narrowly focussed modules which enable students to engage in more in-depth and analytical study. The programme's content makes excellent use of staff expertise, most of whom are engaged in research and publication. Field trips, study tours, visiting speakers, invitations for BA students to research seminars all enhance the programme of study. In addition to this, students have the opportunity to enrol in some classes in other Schools in the Faculty of Humanities and to undertake their own study project or dissertation in their final year. All of these initiatives are strengthened by clear student guidance by lecturers and personal tutors.
