About Religious Studies and Philosophy, BA - at University of Wales Trinity Saint David

Course Overview

A Joint Honours programme in Religious Studies and Philosophy offers students an exciting and attractive collaboration.

Religious Studies and Philosophy are cognate subjects that deal with ideas and the impact of ideas on human society. Both are concerned with questions central to human existence: the nature of truth, change, goodness and justice. Religious Studies provides an essential point of reference for many ideas and thinkers, indeed many of the 'greatest' thinkers have themselves speculated on the truth claims of religion.

Both disciplines examine the big questions - Who are we? What is our place in the world? How should we live? What is reality? They approache such questions through argument, but also through vision and imagination. Philosophy concerns every aspect of our lives, practical as well as theoretical. Through its grounding in real social relations and human activities, it seeks to understand and address the whole spectrum of social, ethical, environmental and political issues of today. Through such contemplation, we are able not only to understand life, but to shape it. If your interests extend to life, the universe and everything, if you want to develop a rich set of life-enhancing skills and the power to influence positive change, then our Religious studies and Philosophy degree might be just for you

Assessment

The School uses a wide range of assessment methods so that students develop a variety of skills that will stand them in good stead in the professional world. In addition to traditional essay assessments, the school uses learning journals, book reviews, textual analyses, group presentations and examinations. For instance on the School's popular study tours to religious sites students are able to submit a learning journal of their experiences. Other modules require students to work together in groups, make presentations and creatively explore the interface between media and religion.

Learning and Teaching methods

The programme offer introductory and intermediate modules that enhance knowledge and understanding, and more narrowly focussed modules which enable students to engage in more in-depth and analytical study. The programme's content makes excellent use of staff expertise, most of whom are engaged in research and publication. Field trips, study tours, visiting speakers, invitations for BA students to research seminars all enhance the programme of study. In addition to this, students have the opportunity to enrol in some classes in other Schools in the Faculty of Humanities and to undertake their own study project or dissertation in their final year. All of these initiatives are strengthened by clear student guidance by lecturers and personal tutors.
