Learn core fields of computer systems - including maths, control, embedded systems and programming, - then apply them in advanced modules. Gain hardware and software skills for careers in robotics, IoT, AI and more, completing individual and group research projects in Years 3 and 4.
Design the hardware, program the software and build the systems that power the future – from robotics and autonomous vehicles to AI, big data and advanced digital infrastructure. This four-year MEng course combines electronics, computer engineering and systems design, preparing you for a career at the forefront of technology.
Informed by world-leading research and shaped with input from industry partners, the course develops expertise in digital and hardware circuit design, systems engineering and programming in C, C++, Python, and Java. You’ll also gain a strong foundation in mathematics, data modelling, intelligent systems and cybersecurity - making you a fully rounded engineer ready to solve real-world challenges.
In Year 1, you will develop core skills across mathematics, computing, electronics and system modelling, while also gaining experience in teamwork and project-based learning.
Year 2 builds on this foundation, with further study in design, control, communications, embedded systems and hardware–software integration, supported by practical design projects.
In Year 3, you will undertake a substantial practical project and choose a specialist pathway. Options include:
Microelectronics, focusing on areas such as semiconductor technologies, integrated systems, and signal processing.
Software and AI, covering topics such as robotics, sensing, optimisation, and machine learning.
In the final year, you will complete an advanced project and deepen your expertise in your chosen specialisation. Microelectronics students may explore computer and system architecture, advanced integrated electronics and manufacturing reliability, while those specialising in software and AI may focus on areas such as deep learning, reinforcement learning and decision-making systems.
This integrated masters degree equips you with the technical skills, practical experience and professional confidence to make an immediate impact in industry or pursue further research in electronics, computing and intelligent systems.
