Course description

The ever-increasing importance in every engineering branch of modeling tools, i.e., virtual prototypes simulating complex physical and societal phenomena, requires a new generation of professionals able to exploit the full potential of the current simulation resources, possessing fundamentally different and innovative work proficiencies. The expertise of modeling engineers cannot be restricted to classical devices, tools, and instrumentation, but requires a deeper and systematic knowledge of the basic concepts of mathematical and numerical modeling, with a wider vision on the intimate inter-relationship between data, physical processes, and computational methods.

The Master degree in "Mathematical Engineering", offered by the University of Padova, captures the evolution of professional engineers proposing an advanced study program that combines both solid fundamental knowledge of the physical processes and deep theoretical and technological competences. This degree exposes the student to a multidisciplinary education lying between engineering and applied mathematics, providing the attendants with the ability to mold their expertise towards several specific disciplines, though still receiving a solid general-purpose engineering and modeling culture.

For this reason, the program contains both theoretical and applied research-oriented courses, with the aim of building an innovative, high-level engineer profile, characterized by a strong theoretical and scientific background on mathematical modeling tools, as well as, on general physical and financial sciences, together with advanced computational engineering expertise. The successful student will acquire advanced skills in the field of mathematical modeling of physical or financial processes, with specific interest in the formulation, validation, and critical use of models and in the fundamental interpretation of related quantitative results. The graduates in Mathematical Engineering will be able to effectively formulate complex engineering problems within a multidisciplinary framework, and transfer and discuss results with experts of different disciplines.

Graduates in Mathematical Engineering can find natural occupational opportunities in agencies operating in the research of innovative technological solutions and advanced design with the aid of virtual prototype systems. The development and use of computational models is attracting a growing number of applications from different technological and scientific fields, as well as in economic and financial sciences, including risk analysis, trading, and investments.

The graduates in Mathematical Engineering have the expertise profile to cover positions of high responsibility in research and development centers, consulting companies, both public and private, working in advanced technological fields of civil, environmental and industrial, engineering, information technology laboratories, financial institutions, banks, insurance companies, energy companies, or consulting firms. Notes about fees for this course

Tuition fees

Information on 2018/19 fees will be available in 2018: amounts will largely stay the same as for A.Y. 2017/18.

For academic year 2017/18: euro 2.597,00.

The above amounts can be significantly waived (minimum fee: 561,00 euro/A.Y.) based on your 'Equivalent Economic Status Index - ISEE'. For further information on how to obtain your ISEE and other income-based reductions, see Funding and fees - Key Documents.

Applicants receiving an offer of admission, either unconditional or conditional, will be asked to pay a tuition fee deposit of euro 182,00 within 30 days to secure their place on the programme.

Entry requirements

Students who wish to register for the second cycl e degree course in Mathematical Engineering must already have a degree or a three-year university diploma or other educational qualification obtained in Italy or abroad, recognized in accordance with current Italian legislation, and also possess specific educational requirements, as well as the following knowledge, skills and abilities: 

Adequate knowledge of basic subjects, such as mathematical and numerical analysis, linear algebra and geometry, physics and statistics, as well as the use of standard software for word processing, data analysis, scientific computing. The ability to use the operational methodological aspects  of mathematics and other basic sciences to interpret and describe engineering problems, physical and/or financial engineering in addition to setting up and conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting extrapolated data and to understand the impact of engineering solutions in the financial and physical environment context.

Admission to the "Mathematical Modelling for Engineering and Science" degree course track is open, however, admission to the "Financial Engineering" degree course track, which requires students to have spent their entire second year abroad (Paris, France), has  a limited number of places per each Academic Year. The number of place s will be determined annually by the DCTC and then announced in the Second Cycle Degree Course's Admissions Notice.

Students will be selected based on:

  • degree mark
  • alternatively, the time in months it take s to graduate
  • alternatively, the number of University Educational Credits (CFUs) cum laude (withoutstanding honour)
  • alternatively, the number of exams passed with a mark/grade equal to 30/30.

The student's knowledge, skills and abilities will be assessed in accordance with the guidelines above.

The educational requirements are as follows:

  • have a degree in class(es) L-7 "Civil and Environmental Engineering", L-8 "Information Technology Engineering", L-9 "Industrial Engineering", L-30, "Physics", L-31, " Computer Sciences', L-35, "Mathematics", L-18 " Business Administration", covered by current Ministerial Decr ee (D.M.) no. 270/04, or alternatively earning 25 University Educational Credits (CFUs) in the following  Disciplinary Scientific Sector (SSDs): MAT/02, MAT/03, MAT/05, MAT/06, MAT/07, MAT/08, FIS/01, SECS-S/01, SECSS/02, SECS-S/03, SECS-S/06
  • knowledge of English at the B2 level

For graduates with a high level of preparation, resulting from the knowledge and skills certified in their degree course track, from educational trainings which are not completely consistent with access  requirements, students may initially choose a different path and/or specific admissions entrance exam.

For applicants holding an Italian degree with a different structure from those covered by the Ministerial Decree 509/99 and Ministerial Decree 270/2004, or in possession of a foreign qualification, verification of educational requirements will be carried out by the Admission Board.

Who is this programme for?

Engineering bachelor students who want to deepen their modelling background and specialise in the development and use of simulation models. Physics and mathematics bachelor students who want to acquire a more applied technological profile and widen their potential job market through the exploitation of their solid theoretical background. Statistics and economics bachelor students who want to become specialists and developer of simulation models for in scientific and financial engineering.
