About Bachelor of Arts (Honours), BA (Hons) - at University of Newcastle, Australia

Students who perform well during their Bachelor of Arts, with a GPA of 5.0 or greater, may apply to undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree.

The BA (Honours) is taught in a flexible format featuring disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning and research. All students complete a common core course and a second compulsory course offered by the discipline or cluster most appropriate to each student's area of specialisation, followed by a written thesis or equivalent project.

For the thesis component, students choose from one of the following:

  • a written research thesis, or
  • a creative and/or digital project with accompanying written exegesis, or
  • a work placement program with a written account and analysis.

Entry requirements

An applicant for admission to candidature must have completed a Bachelor of Arts or an equivalent program with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.0 (credit grade average).

Applicants must have completed:

  • a major in the proposed discipline of study (with at least 40 units at the 3000 level), or
  • where a major does not exist, have completed at least 80 units of study in a relevant discipline/s (with at least 40 units at the 3000 level).
