About Postgraduate Certificate in Education - Secondary School Direct (Spanish), PGCE - at University of Manchester, School of Environment, Education and Development

PGCE courses consists of a variety of learning experiences designedfor those wishing to train as teachers. The majority of the coursefocuses upon practical training in teaching and learning related skills.This practical training is underpinned by the development ofparticipants knowledge and understanding of education theories, ideasand concepts and by enhancing their awareness of current educationalissues and developments. The Secondary courses prepare graduates toteach the National Curriculum and related national strategies, GCSE, ASand A2 level. For the purposes of gaining Qualified Teacher Status,trainees may focus upon the 11-16, 11-18 or 14-19 age range. Learningtakes place through a number of school and university based elements. There will be extended periods of school experience which will provideopportunities to work in a Primary setting and to teach in at least twodifferent Secondary Schools.  A total of approximately 25 weeks duringthe PGCE will be spent experiencing and working in different types ofSchool.

Our School Direct routes involve joint selection of candidates bySchools and University tutors.  When choosing a School Direct route,applicants should identify the particular arrangement that the SchoolDirect Lead School has made for delivery of School Direct with theUniversity of Manchester as these will involve different patterns oftraining.  Applicants should also clarify the 'expectations' to employby the Lead School.

For entry in the academic year beginning September 2017, the tuition fees are as follows:

  • PGCE (full-time)
    UK/EU students (per annum): n/a (prog no longer running)
    International students (per annum): n/a (prog no longer running)

The fees quoted above will be fully inclusive for the course tuition, administration and computational costs during your studies.

All fees for entry will be subject to yearly review and incremental rises per annum are also likely over the duration of courses lasting more than a year for UK/EU students (fees are typically fixed for International students, for the course duration at the year of entry). Self-funded international applicants for this course will be required to pay a deposit of £1000 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. This deposit will only be refunded if immigration permission is refused. We will notify you about how and when to make this payment.

Entry requirements

All applicants require a strong academic record at A level or equivalent and at degree level including a 2:2 honours degree or above. If you are not a native speaker of the language you are proposing to teach (French, German or Spanish), approximately 50% or more of the degree content should have focused on the first language that you are offering to teach. All applicants must also hold qualifications in English language and mathematics at GCSE grade C or above, or hold equivalent qualifications in these subjects.

You should also normally have a second language (French, German or Spanish).  Your knowledge of this second language does not need to be advanced - beginners' level will suffice.  You do not need to have studied this language at degree level.
