About Advanced General Dental Practice, PG Cert - at University of Leeds

This part-time course is open to Home/EU applicants only.

This unique course will advance your skills and clinical development in general dental practice providing core skills in oral health, patient challenges and dealing with complex dental cases. The course has a heavily clinically-based nature and is the only course in the UK that provides an integrated postgraduate clinical education.

The course has been designed in collaboration with General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) to provide flexible, tailored support and will equip you with advanced knowledge and skills to provide more complex, appropriate care for patients, whilst still in the general dental practice setting.

Aimed at experienced dental surgeons who are seeking personal, professional and clinical progression, the course will develop your problem solving skills within a patient-focused setting.

The flexible pathway will run alongside the full Masters programme, where students may take up to five years to attain the full award. Students may exit after completing year one to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate.

  • Course content

    The programme includes:
    • Content across the disciplines of General Dental Practice
    • High quality and supervised clinical practice

    • Access to advanced haptic training simulations
    • Teaching by tutors who understand the needs of general dental practitioners
    • Mentoring from an experienced, practising general dental practitioner

    Modules total 120 credits, of which 40-60 credits will be from clinical practice.

    Each Clinical Practice module requires a commitment to one full day a week at Leeds Dental Institute, supported by consolidating experience undertaken at your own practice. Each of the academic modules will require additional study, taking the equivalent a further day per week.

    Year 1

    This suite of modules aims to update your knowledge in new innovations and emerging evidence to provide a firm foundation on which to build new skills.

    Core Principles of Advanced General Dental Practice (20 credits)
    Takes the knowledge and application of the evidence behind prevention and management of the key dental diseases to a more advanced level.

    Patient Challenges from infancy to old age (20 credits)
    Expands applied knowledge of more complex and challenging patient interactions.

    Managing Dental Aesthetics the Worn Dentition (20 credits)
    Will consider dental appearance and indications for restoration of tooth surface loss.

    Clinical Practice 1
    Refreshing and Refining Skills (60 credits)
    The rehearsal of clinical skills will be validated before progression to management of real cases in the clinics of the Dental Institute and in your own practice.

    Course structure

    You will study at Leeds as a flexible student for one year. Credits required for the Certificate award are 120.

    Year 1

    Learning and teaching

    Enhanced clinical education will be gained under expert supervision at the Leeds Dental Institute, combined with experience undertaken in your own practice (documented through case presentations and assessed by clinical observational assessments in Leeds).

    Learning will be tailored to General Dental Practitioners.

    You will have access to our world-leading virtual learning platform which includes the use of the largest clinical rehearsal suite in Europe.

    Assessment

    You will be assessed on your ability to apply your knowledge of advanced dental practice alongside competency of performing clinical procedures.

    Assessment of professional standards is a key feature and includes the submission of a “living” portfolio covering a professional development plan, 360° feedback, results of patient surveys and personal reflection.

  • Applying, fees and funding

    Entry requirements

    Primary Clinical Dental qualification that is acceptable to the University of Leeds: BDS, BChD or equivalent

    Three years' full time (or equivalent) post-graduation clinical experience in General Dental Practice.

    Letter of recommendation from two registered, senior, dentally-qualified clinicians who are able to verify the details of the application

    Applicants will provide evidence of a satisfactory, recent CQC evaluation of the dental practice where they are principally based, will confirm that the case mix is balanced and that it will demonstrate sufficient flexibility of presentation.

    The University of Leeds will undertake a telephone interview (criteria will be published) to validate this statement.

    English language requirements

    IELTS 7.0 overall, with no less than 6.5 in every skill.. For other English qualifications, read English language equivalent qualifications.
