About Engineering Foundation Year at School of Computing and Engineering, University of Huddersfield

Entry RequirementsPlease see the general entry requirements page Entry requirements for this course are normally one of the following: 60 points from A level (A2, AS) including an A2 level pass in any subject. Appropriate BTEC National Diploma or Certificate. Other appropriate qualifications and experience which will be considered on an individual basis.IntroductionThe Foundation Year provides an excellent entry to engineering if you have not studied the usual technical subjects required for direct entry to a degree course. It prepares you for Year 1 study in any engineering degree at Huddersfield. The Foundation Year is intended for entrants whose qualifications and experience, although acceptable for entry into Higher Education, are not entirely appropriate for normal entry to an engineering degree. You enrol at the outset for the full five year duration of an extended degree, but can delay your choice of a specific course until the end of the Foundation Year. The UCAS number for the Foundation Year is H108 BEng/Genfe. You should use this if you are undecided about your eventual choice of degree course. However, if you wish to apply for a single named course, then you should use the appropriate Extended Engineering UCAS code for that course, as published in the UCAS Guide.Course StructureEngineering Physics Foundation Mathematics Study and Communication Skills Engineering Investigative Studies Technology and SocietyTeaching and AssessmentThe teaching of these subjects is supported by considerable tutorial work. Assessment is througha mix of coursework, laboratory work and examinations.Career OpportunitiesMany students from the Foundation Year have progressed to MEng, BEng(Hons) and BSc(Hons) courses. Some of these have achieved outstanding successes such as: MEng; First Class Honours on BEng(Hons); the Institution of Electrical Engineers Prize for the most outstanding Electronics graduate; the prize of the best final year project on BEng(Hons) courses.Special FeaturesThe foundation year emphasises the development of competence and confidence in the use of fundamental mathematics and physics relevant to the study of engineering.
