About Engineering Technology, BSc - at KU Leuven

Engineers are problem solvers par excellence. They develop intelligent technological solutions that make everyday life easier or safer or they find solutions for complex problems, such as energy efficient production or waste recycling. In each of these projects, engineers take into account preconditions such as sustainability, price, quality and regulation. This bachelor's programme will teach you to tackle technological challenges in a critical and methodical way. You will acquire a broad scientific basis, and get the opportunity to put your knowledge into practice.

What is the programme all about?

Graduates in Engineering Technology need to be all-rounders who are multi-deployable. Therefore, a polyvalent and generic engineering training is crucial. The renewed programme offers a solid engineering basis which you can always fall back on.

The programme offers a broad introduction to mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology. In addition, you will immerse yourself in typical engineering disciplines such as computer science, graphic techniques and project skills. You will learn to think and act critically. You will also develop skills in the field of management, communication and teamwork.

The bachelor’s programme is based on four pillars, which run like a thread throughout the entire programme:

  • Engineers and Science – For engineers, technology and science are inseparable. Gaining scientific knowledge and skills is not a goal in itself, but it is a means when bringing technology into practice.
  • Engineers and Technology – Your technological training starts from day one. You will get to know different technological domains from a versatile, multi-disciplinary point of view. This enables you to make a well-considered choice for a specialisation in the 2nd bachelor.
  • Engineers and the World – Engineers do not only work with science and technology, they also work with people. It is important to develop into an engineer who functions smoothly in a diverse and complex society.
  • Engineering Experiences – An engineering experience challenges you to act and think like a real engineer, by working as a team and bringing together all your knowledge, skills and points of view.

The emphasis on these pillars shifts as you complete the bachelor’s programme. In the first stage, the focus mainly lies on the basic sciences in Engineering and Science. From the second stage, you will choose a specialisation and focus more on a domain-specific technology from your specialisation. Finally, in the third stage, you will choose an option within your specialisation where you can further explore a specific sub-domain.

You will be given many opportunities to put your knowledge into practice, both within the faculty and the business world. You will come into contact with concrete technological problems in all kinds of domains: food, energy, health care, environment ... In every project, you will learn to take into account preconditions such as sustainability, quality and regulations. This bachelor’s programme will give you a good idea on all possible career possibilities and which engineer you want to become.

Strengths

  • From the start of the programme, you will put your knowledge into practice in labs. The campus has an extensive and modern lab infrastructure with equipment on an industrial scale. You will also get to know the industry better through company visits and guest lectures from professionals in the field. The master's thesis in the last year is often linked to a company internship at home or abroad.
  • At Group T Leuven Campus, more than 25% of the engineering students are international. This allows you to study in a truly international environment. Collaborating with other foreign students is also a learning experience and adds value to your study programme and diploma.
  • Group T Leuven Campus is a breeding ground for ambitious student projects. The first Belgian solar car was built here and in 2019, the eighth Solar Team even became world champion in Australia with their self-built solar-powered racing car. The Faculty of Engineering Technology also has several other student teams who are, among other things, building an electric racing car, developing 3D printers for medical applications or making Leuven climate neutral in 2030.
